and when I tried to run the Windows version on my home installation of Win2k, it crashed everytime someone joined.

In my experience linux always seems to turn out on top.
Guess it takes more than your every day WINDOWS jockey to set up a server properly then, I hav setup nothing but a windows server and not had a problem with it, of course there are the problems that come with rushed software but I wouldn't blame windows for those. Seems to me that the forums are full of problems running penguin software as well as uncle bills stuff.

But when did this turn into the Windows vs REDSHIT forum any way??/

Geez, the last thing I want to be referred to as is a "Windows Jockey". :-/ Seeing how I've spent a good majority of my college career doing Windows tech support I think I might know a bit about it.

Have you ever even used "Redshit" as you so elegantly put it? I wouldn't knock it 'til you try it.

I always thought you would automatically run HLDS when you checked the "Run as Dedicated Server" checkbox under "Create Game" in the HL (or CS) GUI... and this gets updated at the same time when HL is, right? So why is this download needed? Is it some sort of enhanced server utility or something? Thanks for whoever clears this up for me.
HLDS is freely downloadable by anyone over the internet. You don't have to actually own Half-Life to have it. Most game developers made a dedicated server freely available over the internet, so that they'll have more people running servers, and hopefully thus can attract gamers.

Additionally, HLDS is much easier to get started than trying to start one through Half-Life's interface (or CS, or whatever... same program). A simple shortcut will start up a server in a matter of seconds, with no need for configuring or navigating through the menu system. This is very essential when you want the server to automatically restart when it crashes and such. You don't have that option with the dedicated server built into Half-Life.

Finally, HLDS gets updated far more often. Half-Life updates (which include HLDS updates with them) are few and far between. People starting dedicated servers without the seperate install of HLDS usually aren't running the latest version, and don't have the latest fixes.

I got the noob server HLDS updated this weekend. its super slick and steam/1.6 looking. the new steam style server console iZ teh bizz-om! it reminds me of windows task manager: you can see cpu usage, fps, in, out speed and other stuff on a scrolling graph. changing server settings is now easier with the GUI. I had to install the new admin-mod DLLs to get the server up too. a very nice upgrade that will make admin-noobs like myself happy.

someone needs to crack the xbox bios so i can turn one into a linux based HLDS. that would be a pimp little server: cheap too.

Anybody else having trouble getting a CS server up and running the new HLDS release? I downloaded and installed the beta, and when I open up the GUI, there is no Counter-Strike under the pulldown menu. All I see is Team Fortress Classic, Ricochet, Deathmatch, and Half-life. Any help would be appreciated!
