    cpoint: admin mod

Counter-Point continues to entertain and inform with this week's exciting email trainscript. As always, rizzuh and I butt heads over a topic, this time Admin Mod and the admins who use it. Here's just a taste of what you can get if you click:
The client/server nature of modern FPS multiplayer games has helped expand their popularity and playability. It also means that none of the servers are the same, and the player's experience is subject to the whims of an admin who is under no ethical or job-related rules -- merely his own morals to guide the way forward.

I was a server admin, once. This was way back in the beta 2 -- beta 5 days, before admin mod or really any special toys to make the admin's life easier. I'd like to say that I was completely upstanding, but I had my devious moments. I may have kicked someone I didn't like, or changed the gravity on a lark. There wasn't much I could do other then that -- things have changed considerably for the admin who wants to goof around.
Like what you see? Read on, then, and be sure to keep the discussion going on the comments page.

We'll be taking a break next week (due to E3), but Counter-Point will be back in two weeks. If you have an idea of what rizzuh and I can talk about next, email me!

Yes, I will be going to E3 but I'm not going to be entertaining any more questions since this topic is about Admin Mod and not E3 (hint to moderators). Sorry!

"Giving players Warcraft 3 powers, or matrix-like moves—doesn't that detract from the original intentions of Counter-Strike as a whole? Is it right to make these gameplay modifications? Is it right to argue against these gameplay modifications if people want to play them?"
But if thats detracting the essence from CS wasn't CS in the first place detracting the essence of Half-Life?

No, it was accentuating the essence of Half-Life, not pushing it to the point of rediculous.

I was an admin on the CSR pub for over a year before it went to hell, and I still admin for their private to I'm a quite experienced admin. So yes, I agree that the purpose of admin powers is to keep the game cheater free. I have an old mantra: The best cheat-detection device is a good admin. Admins such as myself know the difference between a skilled player and a cheater, and honestly the number of people who can seems to wane now that so many 12 year olds have "da powah". If all the commands that adminmod had were admin_kick and admin_ban I'd be happy. Of course, admin_execclient unbindall was a great way to piss off cheaters before banning them

As a server admin, I am careful who I choose to give admin access to. We aren't all 12 year old power hungry junkies.

Adminmod greatly increases the modibility of CS. Nevermind the fact you can write your own plugins to do just about anything you want to now, apparantly adminmod is a worthless program according to the authors of this article.

It screws up hitboxes . Then again, it makes headshots larger as long as you don't aim at the middle or lower half of the head, heh.

admin_fuck_you is so utterly pointless I want to scream.

Also, maybe they really could do that democracy tool you were discussing. A command, that, when you connect, admin mod reads, makes admin mod display whatever it is you want it to display, and then not again for a certain amount of time. It could work?

The most intellegent quote I think is this:
The best admins are those who we don't even know are admins—the ones who play on the server just like you or I, lurking in the shadows ready to kick those trouble makers.
I totally agree. Because then people don't go OMG ADMINX BAN SO AND SO OMFG HE HAX. I mean, I did that on my old server, lurked in the shadows. And I noticed until I would announce I was the admin or someone else would, people would focus on the game a bit more. It's weird how people are.

I hate it when admins just change maps all the time for no reason

That's gay. They change it to shitty maps too like rats or awp_map. No one wants to play that bullshit, they want dust2, italy, aztec, or something that's an official map. Ar, I'll kill 'em all.

I've been an admin for a few years, and the most common command I use is admin_chat to talk with other admins on the server, or admin_say to congratulate a good shot or move while I'm dead and he is alive or vice versa.

admin mod doesnt piss people off, people piss people off.

in other news, any and all metamod programs (including metamod itself) cause the hitboxes to be perverted.

before you ask both questions, by perverted i mean not where they should be, and adminmod is a metamod... mod.
