it's called CS2. i don't think there will be "LOTS of lag" though. Unless you're still trying to run it on your p2 400.

I understand what you guys were saying about single player communities, and i agree that they are not as large as multiplayer communities, but some of them are pretty damn close.

Max payne is the only single player community? i think not, ever checked out the Grand Theft Auto III + VC community? tons and tons of people creating new levels, cars, even missions for the game, probably same amount of people that are creating new skins, sprays, weapon models for cs. Even the witty allusion to the sim city community holds some bearing here, as they (ssadly not as much recently) have a large online following, also the Sims expansion. Duke Nukem, Metal Gear Solid, FINAL FANTASY! The list goes on. Do some homework before you make statements like that.

(speaking of Final Fantasy, I have yet to see a cd compilation of the Counter Strike music be released, along with the fruit-of-the-loom 1337 KR3W breifs, and the 18in Counter-Terrorist action figures)

Our opinions usually agree so it would be pointless to have the two of us doing cpoint.
Perhaps at the end of rizzuh's response and before asspennies reply you can have an email saying, "Good point." It would be fantastic.

i never really cared for single player fps including HL... i loved the real time online aspect of CS as a multiplayer game.

As for the comment about " I can't think of a single player title with a coherent community at all." if you mean fps then yes youre right.. as for other types of games, i am part of a large non-official site in which SimCity4 is the main topic. At Simtropolis we have thousands of members on the forums and all kinds of other content. I have not seen many other games/sites with continuous updates, support and extras that lasted more then 3 months.

I have met quite a few other people there that also play CS but still think single player fps just suck. The only one i played for longer then 10 minutes offline was UT2003 but that was still only for 30 minutes max, id usually go back to CS or SC.

Version 1.6? ill play it until HL2 (actually CS2) comes out which should also be about the time I'll be building my new computer with an Athlon64 (hopefully)...

Until then I will stick to my CS and SC.

Also please forgive me for going slightly off topic, i was playing CS on my other computer, typing when dead, thats why it took me 45 minutes to write this.

In order for their to be multiplayer there has to be 'multiple players' so obviously there is always a demand for someone to get more players into the game, preferably friends, or maybe even people they don't know. Thus, more popularity. Since all of its users are required to have Internet (almost always nice broadband), therefore, all of its users online, talking about it, trying to communicate with other users.

Multiplayer games are ALWAYS open-ended in some way or another, so one can never "beat the game". There is always new situations and new competition, therefore no lame enemy AI, which is still VERY limited (we'll see how HL2 AI turns out, looks good now tho!).

Single player games can't be as popular as multiplayer especially because of the 'everquest' factor of all games now. There is still SO MANY great single player games, that we will remember forever, and many GREAT aspects about it, so why aren't more single player games becoming co-operative? I think the console industry has realized this, as every FPS games for console is 2 player story modes. The things that make single player great are STILL not being incorporated into multiplayer format, and it's really time developers opened their eyes to that... Imagine what we saw of HL2 being

                      co-op!?!?!?

Also this is a pretty important time to watch the HL mod community to SEE if the modders just convert their mod entirely into HL2 engine. The only time I can remember something like this is with the old Team Fortress on different engines, and it eventually ending up on the purdy ol' HL engine. Mods have never been as big of a deal until Half Life, so if CS, DoD, NS, etc. are created with HL2 engine, it could be an example modders follow. Though better for the game in some aspects, I would imagine it would cause a huge split and cause more loss of fans/players then any old update.

This really stirred some patriotic feelings in me.

It feels good to be part of community who support, like and enjoy the same things. Adrenalin hits me like a fist everytime I think of CZ, CS2 and HL2.

                                Good debate.

I only like multiplayer games now. Diablo I & II got me hooked into the multiplayer world and since then I haven't gone back. When I finally tried Counter Strike, I was hooked. Being able to play and interact with other people makes all the difference. I even recently purchased BF1942 just because of the multiplayer aspect. I will buy HL2 when it comes out, but I don't see myself purchasing many more single player games in the future.
