You can onlu be so cautious before it gets over the top. They did not need to disconnect there internet access, but maybe just use a better email program that doesn't have so many security holes.
So having the code on computers with internet access was not their fault?
Bottom line: They should have been A LOT more cautious.Comment

lol how do you think multiplayer will fail? Thats amazing to me , I also doubt valve will dealy the release again such they gave such a inaccurate release date anyways. I think there may be some infected pirated versions which i'm glad, cause if your downloading games you deserve a virus. Don't give me the "i'm trying it out" excuse just dl the demo or read a review.Comment

Nobody said disconnect their internet access completely. Just don't have it on computers with the source code. That's a big DUH.

k I've been spreading anti-panic viewpoints on other forums, especially steampowered.com, here's a condensed opinion as to why I don't think this leak will be very damaging:
1) HL2 was going to be pirated anyway, so no effect on sales figures from this particular leak (also, so far evidently no art files posted)
2) there would have been a whole bunch of hard-to-detect cheats anyway, maybe now they'll be just a bit more elegant in their implementation. Server admin-driven banning is the most important anti-cheat measure anyhow.
3) it's very questionable if a major publisher would dare to use large portions of the code w/o licensing, there's a good chance they'd get caught
4) security-wise open source, even unintentionally "liberated", is generally good (they'll probably need to rework the CDkey bits tho)
5) perhaps now they'll receive voluntary fixes and even improvements to the code
I'd say that Valve needs to release HL2 as soon as possible to get things rolling in the right direction.Comment

i also think the anti panic theories are the ones that will be closest to reality.. sure, some hackers may (probably did) get that code.. but in the end i don't think were gonna see an incredible flow of absolutely unstoppable hacks, etc going around.
The idea that multiplayer will fail, to me, is more ludicrous then anything else, and falls in the 'vote for this humorous idea' kind of vote.
whats probably going to happen, is increased security at valve until its released, possibly having the game pushed back to Christmas.. (who honestly trusted the September 30 release date, anyways?) IMO valve should be aiming for a Christmas release, since the game is so hyped up (not in any bad way), and they'll probably hit everyones wallet hard if they release it then..
Bottom line- Christmas 2003, stop whining about valve's fault or not.Comment
