1: always make back up CD's

2: You can read it off the Internet (or photocopy it if your that desperate)

3: Download it off the Internet then burn it onto a cd, or if you know someone that has it borrow it, or just buy it if you find it somewhere.
      That sounds realistic.

you use someone else's steam account :O~

Good luck finding a working CDKey on Google.. and hoping that it's not banned by VAC... and that it's not in use by someone else who Googled it..

How would one make it more secure? How would you propose that only Joe User can use the account he registered? With the more limitations you add to where and how Joe can log on the less inclined he will be to use Steam anyway.
I don't know where they get their keys but i know it doesn't take em long to put in a new one when VAC bans them.

And as for the account system, i don't know too many people running around on EQ accounts they don't own. It's possible to keep it to one account per person, just not with the current system half-life uses.

On the flip side, what if you step on the CD and break it? Or the manual becomes tattered and useless? Or the game isn't even in production anymore and you can't find it in any stores?
Okay. In my room is my PS2, XBox and PC. In all I've got roughly 150+ games etc for them. How do I avoid stepping on them all and breaking them? By not putting them on the floor. Plus of course, even if I did step on a game/DVD/music CD, I'm not actually heavy enough to break it [insert generic "Rizzuh is a tub of lard" joke here], unless I really stamp on it hard.

As for the manual, that's never a problem. I usually either a) read he manual once and never bother with it again, b) play the game straight away and don't bother with the manual at all {always fun to try and figure out how to play a Final Fantasy game without reading the manual first}, c) read the manual for an hour so I know it off-by-heart and then don't need it again. Losing or damaging a manual really doesn't matter. And www.gamefaqs.com has guides and manuals for basically every game in existance anyway.

If the game isn't in production anymore, there are still ways to get it. First off, many stores like GAME, Gamestation etc sell pre-owned (and often really old, hard-to-find) games very cheaply. While if you can get the game brand new you should get it new, if it's an ancient game it's worth a quick look in one of what is generally known here as "the shit basket". And if you can't find it there either, you can always ask stores to try and track down a copy for you. I've done that quite a few times, and normally they don't charge you extra for it.

Is it just me, or does anyone else not use steam because it requires a 1 gig processor? Call me prehistoric, but my box has a p3 550. However, before you comment, its 3x faster than my living room box running a 1.1 gig celeron.

maybe if it were possible to purchase HL2 + CS2 using steam with a one off payment, then wait for it to DL, then burn it onto CD/DVD or woteva, then it would be easier and simpler for those of us who are stuck in our bedrooms and too afraid of the daylight to come out.

but ONLY if it is cheaper to DL it. otherwise ppl would just buy it from a store.

ALSO, why not provide a generic download for HL2/CS2, then all you need to do is purchase JUST your CDKEY? and nothing else. the cdkey should be a rediculous size, like 1024 bits to deter aggressive key generation methods.

                      :)

I myself love it, once the rush is over Steam is a great program! The release could have gone smooter with them releasing the large install file and the small one at the same time to a lot more mirrors, but it went about how i expected it to. In another two months everyone will be loving Steam i bet.

i'm sure we'll get use to it, so long as they NERF THE SHIELD PLZ K THX.

i don't really have a problem with the shield, it's just annoying as hell dealing with 10 shield wielding fragots.
