Heck, I don't see anything wrong with that. As long as MicroShaft didn't make it, it could be a good thing. I'll bet Valve could do a better job with an OS than anything with WinBlows on it.



Then again, I'm still in awe of WinXP Pro...damn it's nice...

I have to agree with Azure. The reason why Valve hasn't said anything about the anti-cheat is so the cheat-makers can not gain information to overcome them. Now that they're releasing it to the beta testers, some corrupt testers will either use the information to make the cheats (they were going undercover), or they will leak the info through E-mail or something to the cheat-makers. Valve is too trusting. (Considering we know this much information about the new Counter-Strike and HL when we're not supposed to.)

Hi, I'm Rick Ellis, the Engineering Manager running the Steam project at Valve software. This is not a joke. Those of you that have access to the steam beta site will recognize me.



If you'd like to participate in the beta send an email to steamsupport@valvesoftware.com stating in the topic STEAM BETA. Include all pertinent information about your PC, the OS you are running and your internet connection. Please do not send the emails directly to me, I will simply ignore them.



There is really only one requirement for getting in, you must have a broadband connection >384kbps. We are going to be opening the beta up to more people in the next couple weeks and I could use more names of those of you that would like to participate. Please don't get upset if you don't get in immediately as we will be loading the system in increments in order to test the scalability of the system. Also as with any beta program there will be times when the system is down or we ask that you re-install everything. Please be patient as once this product is complete I think you will agree it's unlike anything you've ever seen.



Currently, Steam users can only play on steam servers, but that will change very shortly so those of you participating in the beta currently and complain you can't play against your friends will be surprised in the next couple weeks. There are many more things in store for those that participate in the beta.



As for providing information regarding our cheats, Azure is correct, you're not likely to see us publish anything related to it as we do not want to help anyone with cheating.

BTW I don't know if you guys have figured this out yet, but of all things, the word "guillable" isn't in the dictionary! Can you believe they'd leave a world like that out?!?!?!

*update* the beta testers say that cs 1.4 isn't cheat protected very well, shows what valve knows, looks like one of those hackers brought a new version of the speedcheat back.

gobd - first off, I'm not sure how they can tell, but keep in mind that the Anti-cheat is in first of many phases, don't believe for a second that we're finished...



Those that don't believe that I'm real, don't send in an email :) New "Special Offer Keys" will be sent out shortly. We were holding off on alot of them for this release as we expected to have to have people jump through some serious hoops. Turns out we didn't have to ask them to do that, but we didn't want to get new testers started and immediately put them through this.



If you didn't get in the first time gobd, send it in again, initially we only took >768k, with fairly strict system reqs to limit the # of testers we have. Now we're looking for other speeds as well.



Oh and JDE, I just responded to your email from my Valve account, go check your email :) Are you a believer now?

I'm sure i'll change my mind the day CS is released and i'm in a line at fileplanet with 10000 other people trying to get CS, the beta testers probably get the final staight from valve with no waiting...
