  • New Apple TV Can Also Play Games - Starts at $150 for 32GB Model

Apple announced a new Apple TV today that can play games. No, not just mobile games either, but like, actual games. Starting at $149 (USD) for the 32GB model ($199 for 64GB), you can get an Apple TV that is capable of streaming TV shows and movies from your favorite services alongside playing a variety of games.

The hardware includes the base unit sporting an A8 processor (same as the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus), a remote with motion controls, a touch panel, and "basic" buttons that control volume and playback. You can also use your various iOS devices (iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches) as a controller for the device. Third party gamepads are not only supported, but at least one is (SteelSeries Stratus XL) being endorsed by Apple since they will not have one of their own at launch.

Games will include iOS titles alongside some exclusives. We already saw Beat Sports by Harmonix announced. Crossy Road will feature multiplayer that is exclusive to Apple TV. Many games built for Apple TV will allow the user to instantly resume where they left off earlier on another device. Disney Infinity 3.0 was also announced for the Apple TV this afternoon.

Below are a few of the games supported on Apple TV, as shown on their Apple TV page. The games shown below are: Galaxy on Fire: Manticore Rising, Rayman Adventures, Shadowmatic, Transistor, Guitar Hero Live, and Beat Sports.

You can see a few more shots of the hardware alongside a shot of the third-party $50 SteelSeries controller Apple kept mentioning.
