The Oculus Rift team is showing off a new 1080p prototype at E3 2013 this week. The team is showing off the new, higher resolution device in conjunction with Unreal Engine 4.
At present, Oculus has no plans to release the new 1080p kit to developers. However, this new prototype is one of the many steps being taken to bring the Rift to the end consumer, which has long since promised higher resolutions than the 720p development kits already in the hands of many.
IGN was fortunate enough to be among the first to spend some time with the new Rift, walking through a snow-covered fortress at the foot of a volcano. After trying out the new headset, the visual improvements are immediately noticeable. The "screen door" effect so noticeable in the current 720p development kit is significantly reduced, and the lighting effects on display in the Unreal Engine 4 engine look fantastic.
