The Making of Mirage for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Valve and Hidden Path Entertainment take us behind the scenes of the making of Mirage, an updated version of the classic map from Counter-Strike's glorious past.

Not many people know about Mirage, unless you were a professional Counter-Strike player. Honestly, I completely forgot that map existed period. However, it should see new life and make for a good addition to the map rotation when it launches next week for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Above is a good example of our attempt to improve the map’s overall readability. You’ll notice in the classic Mirage map, most of the wall textures had a dark and noisy bottom half – right at player height. In most lighting conditions, this had the potential to reduce enemy readability. For the updated Mirage, we went with lower contrast, less noise and a brighter palette to make player silhouettes easier to identify against the background.

You’ll also notice that in the image above, the boxes on the left that lead to balcony have been changed to better match the theme of the map. However, the changes are purely cosmetic: the dimensions are the same and the gameplay hasn’t changed.

The blog update on the Counter-Strike website has a number of new images and behind the scenes information that you should check out. It details some of the major changes that you can look forward to in next week's update.

Does it jog the memory if it's mentioned that Mirage is an adapted de_cpl_strike?
