Valve's Community Created Content is Big Business for Some

In an interview that followed the BAFTA awards, Valve's Gabe Newell touched upon a number of subjects. Perhaps the most interesting bit taken from this is the fact that community created content is huge business, not just for Valve but for the creators themselves.

Newell said that those creating and selling content through the Steam Workshop, and various in-game storefronts such as the Mann Co. Store in TF2, end up making some big bucks. He said that some are making as much as $400,000 each, which is presumed to be after Valve's 75% cut. That means Valve is pulling in over $1 million from one user's created content.

Compared to last year, Valve's business has grown by 50% and attributes the success to platforms like the Steam Workshop.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go kick myself for giving up my old hobby of digital design from some years back.
