Nathan Brooks, the 14-year old in question, may be tried as an adult in this case. He has a history of getting into trouble both at home and also at the Christian Academy that he attended. In 2010, Nathan was accused of molesting a younger girl. No charges were filed in that incident.
According to a Moses Lake police report, Nathon Brooks told police that he had been considering killing his parents 38-year-old Jonathan Brooks and 39-year-old Elizabeth Brooks, since the age of eight. What finally drove him to try to kill his parents was being grounded for two weeks from using electronic devices — including playing video games. His punishment was for stealing his father's credit card, according to the report. He had also recently been punished with detention at school for being late to class.
On Friday police say that Nathan Brooks pried open his father's gun safe and retrieved a .22 caliber pistol. After listening to music for 90 minutes, the young Brooks decided he would kill his parents. At about 10 pm that evening Brooks went into his parents room and shot both his mother and father. His parents had no idea who had shot them at the time and called 911 to say that they had been shot by someone who broke into their house.

Naturally, his affinity towards playing games does have a larger role here. In an interview with the police, Nathan says that he was "obsessed with video games."
“He said he quit playing violent video games because he thought they were making him more violent,” Moses Lake police Sgt. Mike Williams wrote in his police report. “I asked him how much he played video games, and he told me ‘24/7,’ up until he got his electronics taken away.”
“He said he was rethinking it, but said ultimately the voice telling him to do it was louder than the one telling him not to,” Williams continued. “He said he just heard over and over in his head that he would be able to do whatever he wanted if he killed his parents.”
“He shot his dad first, [and] then he shot his mom, [and] then shot again at his dad when [his father] rolled out of bed,” the report continued. “Nathon said that when he was firing at his mom and she tried to get up, so he fired at her twice more and she stopped moving.”

Both of his parents are still alive. His father, Jonothan Brooks was released from the hospital. His wife, Elizabeth Brooks is able to communicate through sign language and will undergo surgery soon.
So where does the blame fall on this one? The parents? A medical condition? Video games? All of the above? None of the above?
