Gabe Newell Responds to Today's Layoffs at Valve by Offering a Non-Response

Valve's Gabe Newell has finally issued a statement concerning today's layoffs from Valve.

"We don't usually talk about personnel matters for a number of reasons. There seems to be an unusual amount of speculation about some recent changes here, so I thought I'd take the unusual step of addressing them. No, we aren't canceling any projects. No, we aren't changing any priorities or projects we've been discussing. No, this isn't about Steam or Linux or hardware or [insert game name here]. We're not going to discuss why anyone in particular is or isn't working here."

That, essentially, cleared up nothing. Given this official response on the matter, it may be some time before the real reasons for these layoffs are revealed by anyone.

Gabe was probably annoyed about bullshit articles that are hinting that this would affect development of any actual game. These people just do research and are not real valve developers. They were probably outsourced by a client to work for valve.

While I agree Gabe was probably annoyed about the rumors, you may actually want to check the complete list of people let go. Realm Lovejoy most certainly was a developer and a lot of these people were not simply "outcoursed by a client", as a few had been there since the start of the company. Just sayin'

There are quite a few notable names on that list. Perhaps the most notable one, for me at least, was Jason Holtman. He was a huge reason why Steam even exists period. If Valve did have a hierarchy, he'd have probably been one of the top 5 employees at Valve.
