Strangely enough, this date is actually a delayed release date from an internal goal the team had set. Rockstar mentions that they originally wanted to have the game out in Spring 2013, but they wanted the extra development time instead of trying to rush the game to release.

Grand Theft Auto V promises to be the "biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world Rockstar Games has yet created." They also say that this game will have a "brand new and ambitious approach to open world multiplayer." Well, color me intrigued!
