As part of his big birthday bash, in which a number of visitors to 4chan's /v/ visited Valve's offices, Valve's Gabe Newell 'confirmed' that a next-generation engine is in the works at the company.
Previously, there were bits and pieces of data that indicated Valve was secretly working on a new game engine. Today, the video shown below shows a Q&A session with Valve's Gabe Newell that has him confirming a new engine is indeed in the works.
The reveal comes around the 6:10 mark in the video.
Take that for what you will, but don't take it as an official announcement of anything just yet. Those remarks from Gabe can be taken a number of ways and are certainly open to interpretation. Though it would certainly be nice to see what Valve can do with a new engine, as there's no doubt that the Source Engine, as it is, can only be upgraded so much before you realize just how dated it looks compared to other engines. That, and the fact that it doesn't handle large, open environments very well... LOADING.
