If you want to keep your old character names from the first Guild Wars for Guild Wars 2, you would be wise to pay attention here. You must log in to your original Guild Wars account prior to July 31 in order to reserve your names.
That's all you have to do here. Fire up the original game client, log in, and voila you're good to go. These names will not be kept indefinitely, however. You must create characters in Guild Wars 2 with your reserved names either during the pre-launch period, during the launch day, and for a brief period shortly following launch.
Failure to register your names after that point will free them up for anybody to grab.
