Windows 8 Launches on October 26

While it isn't gaming news per se, it should be noted by PC users and gamers alike that Windows 8 is slated to be released on October 26.

Windows 8 features a secondary interface, Metro, faster start up times, better Explorer and file handling, improved file transfer, native USB 3.0 support, and more.

Upgrades from XP, Vista, or 7 to Windows 8 Pro will run you just $39.99, a very attractive offer to even the most anti-Windows 8 persons out there. Even I, someone who dislikes most everything about Metro on a desktop environment can't help but think that's a good deal (especially when people say that Metro doesn't have to be used in most cases).

Honestly the fact that you don't have to stare at metro all the time makes me more interested.

I'll have to see what it's like without Metro. I think I will be sticking with Windows 7, even though I can get 8 for only $15.

I wouldn't upgrade to Windows 8, I've played heavily with the preview and everytime I fire up my VM with it makes me gag a bit. I feel like I am using my computer as a tablet xD.

If I can minimize the Metro use, then I'm not about to pass up a $40 OS. The file transfer improvements, Explorer improvements, and better default TaskManager are almost worth the cost of entry alone.

So, is it worth it or not? Is it heavier or lighter than win7? I feel so weird when I look at all these previews, it looks like a cellphone OS and not a PC one. Where is my beloved desktop full of icons?

The metro screen is completely customizable and has streaming data potential, like a weather app, similar to how 'gadgets' work on a Windows 7 or Vista desktop, except much more functional. However, you can get to a desktop environment similar to Windows 7 and spend most/all of your time there if you want. But, at the developers conference I went to, there was an emphasis on 'apps' using the metro style interface. It does look and operate like a cellphone OS, although you can use your mouse and keyboard if you don't have a touch screen. But it's really built around the concept of a touch screen anyway.

I used to use a Metro Rainmeter skin, that was essentially a straight copy and had all the apps and streaming apps and whatnot. Hated it.
