A reader on The Verge noticed that in a recent update to the Steam mobile app for Android, a number of additional genres and categories popped up that you may not have expected to see. Beyond the typical gaming related categories, notable additions of "Accounting", "Animation & Mideling", "Audio Production" and others were also included.
Could this mean that Valve will soon be offering more than just games through their digital distribution platform? Perhaps. Keep in mind that they already do have a few applications on Steam that aren't actually games, including The Final Hours of Portal 2 and Indie Game: The Movie. They also offer up a few first party applications such as the recently released Source Filmmaker.
Nothing has been stated by Valve and this is apparently the first time this has been seen publicly through Steam on any platform. With Steam Greenlight, could we also see indie developers promoting their sweet new, non-gaming related apps alongside AAA releases? We just might.
Curiously, I opened up the Steam app on my Android based phone just a few moments ago and did not see any of those additional categories. We at TGN are unaware of how or why those categories showed up for the reader at The Verge, if it was a hack, a glitch, or just a random fluke. Thus we cannot verify anything seen here until it's officially announced or refuted by Valve.
