Real Money Auction House in Diablo III Requires an Authenticator

A new posting from Blizzard serves to inform the masses that if you want to use the real-money auction house in Diablo III, you're going to need to get an authenticator for your account.

Starting today, in order to add to your Battle.net Balance, players will be required to have a Battle.net Authenticator or Battle.net Mobile Authenticator attached to their Battle.net account. For clarity, this means you’ll need to have an Authenticator to add to your balance via Battle.net Account Management or to send the proceeds of your real-money auction house sales to your Battle.net Balance.

Please note that players who previously added Battle.net Balance to their account prior to this change will be able to use it to make eligible purchases on Battle.net and in the auction house without attaching an Authenticator. However, an Authenticator will be required to add to your balance in the future, as explained above.

Don't yet have an authenticator then you should most definitely get one right now. They're free if you get it for Android or iOS devices and just a few bucks if you want a physical authenticator device.

I am guessing that is because having the authenticator on the same PC as the game completely breaks the whole idea of two-factor authentication

And because of it's nature, it's also quite easy to circumvent too. If someone already has access to your PC, they have access to that Windows based authenticator. And if your hard drive dies, then you're also screwed.

Why dick around with that when there are already two free options out there and one cheap pay one? Also, the "mobile authenticator" they have isn't a true authenticator. Only the ones for the iOS and Android are. The mobile one is just a misnomer that they're planning on changing the name of.

Not everyone can get or wants to pay additional shipping outside the US to get the physical keychain, and not everyone has a smartphone.

The PC one is as real as the Mobile ones (same algorithms), it just isn't official nor supported. Running it on a separate PC is as good an alternative as running anything else. And no one has access to it as it as the key is encrypted.

I think you can download an Android Emulator, it's legal from the android page, and use it on a separate computer,or in the one you're playing but this might fall in the problem mentioned above.

And I think it's also available on Blackberry.

Well, you can set another specific password just to access the pc authenticator.exe , if that helps with anything.
