Red Orchestra 2 Getting Free GOTY Content Update and Free Weekend

Tripwire Interactive is tickled pink that PC Gamer awarded them with the "Multiplayer FPS of the Year" award. They're so delighted, in fact, that they are billing their upcoming patch and content update as the "GOTY Edition Free Content Pack".

As the name implies, the GOTY Edition Free Content Pack (hereby known as GOTYEFCP) will be a free update to all current and future owners of Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad. In addition, the game will have a free weekend beginning on Thursday, May 24 at 10AM PST and running through Sunday, May 27.

Those who do not yet own the game can pre-load for the upcoming free weekend by visiting Steam. Also, I'm almost willing to bet that the game will go on sale once the free weekend kicks off. Maybe. I don't know for sure but that's typically how these things pan out, right?

The Red Orchestra 2 GOTYEFCP includes:

•"Action" mode - Featuring a crosshair, easier aiming and toned down recoil,
reduced damage and open access to a wide range of weaponry Action mode is the perfect first step for players into the world of Red Orchestra.

    • "Classic" mode blends the gameplay innovations of the new game with the
tactical and edgy gameplay of the original giving the fans of the first game exactly what they want.

    • Mamayev Kurgan - complete new map, featuring both close-quarters battles in trenches and bunkers, as well as longer ranged combat across the famous hill in Stalingrad

    • Refined and improved gameplay across the board, vehicle improvements, and way better performance and polish. We listened to the community and based on their feedback refined and tweaked almost every major feature in the game!

In case you missed two of our previous looks at this content update as it existed in an unfinished and very beta format, you may be interested in these fine links. Those links include a look at the game's "Action" mode as it existed shortly after being added to the RO2 beta, and a very, very early look at Mamayev as it looked shortly after the latest beta first launched.

Poor framerate, hit detection, smaller scale maps, laser AI when they were in the gunner's seat in tanks, incredibly poor performance on even the highest end rigs (at the time of release), poor optimization, unlocks that most people hated, the "one button does everything" setup, a lack of promised coop (which still is not included), single player campaign that was broken for many people right at the training area...

And that's just the stuff I'm allowed to talk about. (I was an external beta tester. I guess I still am. I'm under an NDA.)

        Edit: (Yoink)

I was kinda sad the game died down as it did. I was really enjoying myself when it first came out got a solid amount of time playing it.

They have really, really bad timing with this.

              BF3 double XP weekend
              Free Civ V weekend
Tribes: Ascend double XP weekend (the game itself is also free)
