Sony Planning on Cutting 10,000 Jobs

Revealed in a report by The Japan Times Online (via IGN), Sony is reportedly cutting 10,000 employees by the end of 2012. This reduction accounts for 6% of Sony's global workforce and is being done "in a bit to regain global competitiveness."

The "good" news in this, if you work in the PlayStation division at Sony, is that about half of the layoffs directly impact the divisions of Sony that create "small and medium-sized display panels and noncore chemicals." IE: Not the gaming divisions.

That doesn't rule out the remaining 5,000 jobs, however. It also does not state if those 5,000 additional cuts take into account the jobs lost when Sony shut both BigBig Studio and Zipper Interactive. Seven senior managers are also expected to give up their bonuses this year.

This is beyond saddening honestly, ten thousand people are about to lose their jobs because Sony wants to "regain global competitiveness?" Sigh.
