    New Nvidia 301.24 Drivers Add Adaptive VSync, FXAA, and More

    What was once some exclusive features in the GeForce GTX 680 are now being made available to all Nvidia users with 8-series GPU's and later. Adaptive VSync, FXAA support in hundreds of games, and more are all now available in the 301.24 beta driver release from Nvidia.


    Many gamers enable Vertical Synchronization (VSync) to prevent screen-tearing, an unsightly occurrence caused by frame rates exceeding a monitor’s refresh rate. The downside is the occasional and equally annoying stutter when frame rates drop below the locked VSync frame rate, and again when they return to the locked rate.

    To fix the problem, the GeForce 301.24 beta drivers come loaded with NVIDIA Adaptive VSync, an automated technique that disables VSync when frame rates fall below the locked rate, and re-enables it when they return to the locked rate, significantly reducing stuttering whilst still preventing tearing.

    Using Metro 2033’s 100% repeatable benchmark we are able to accurately demonstrate the benefits of NVIDIA Adaptive VSync, as the following charts show. Please note that the measurement artifacts, the points above and below 30 and 60 frames per second, are a result of how frame times are recorded by the benchmark, and are not seen in-game. Despite this ‘noise’, Metro 2033’s benchmark is able to visually capture and display the real world benefits of Adaptive VSync far better than any frame-capturing application we’ve evaluated.


    There are also a number of performance increases for just about every card made in these drivers.

    I don't get it, is this good for games with somewhat low performance? like 30ish framerate per second?

      Adaptive VSync acts like this...

      If your game has framerates above your monitor's VSync (example: 60) then they enable VSync to keep the tearing at bay yet keep a constant 60FPS framerate. If the framerate drops below 60 frames per second, it disables VSync automatically to prevent it from dropping immediately to 30 frames per second, instead you only lose a few frames here and there until you return to 60FPS at which point it re-enables VSync. It removes hitching and drastic framerate drops big time to provide for a more consistent experience since typical VSync will often cut your framerate in half (hence the jumps from 60fps to 30fps in the above chart at left) until 60 frames per second returns.

      Simply enable it as a global option and bam, it should work on most of your games. I heard it works beautifully in Skyrim, Metro, Battlefield 3, etc.

      While there are performance increases in the driver update itself, it won't drastically help you but does improve performance in the games they list in their change log.

        so if you do not have over 60fps then you still do not enable vsync right?

          With Adaptive VSync, you don't do anything. You set it in the nvidia control panel and it handles it all.

            Right, exactly. V(vertical refresh rate)sync just limits your frame rate to your moniters refresh rate. This is usually 60(hz). Some monitors support higher refresh rates like 75hz, 100hz or even 200hz on flat screen televisions. The vsync frame rate would then be of the respective rate like 75fps, 100fps, or even 200fps.
            If you don`t get more than 60fps with your system. Then this is not so interesting for you. Though, now you know. You know?

                Strange I always play with vsync and I've never noticed my FPS dropping to 30 when it wasn't at 60. Most games that will spike lower than 60 I might get as low as 40ish.
