Sony Pulls 2 Downloadable PSN Titles That Allowed Homebrew Code to Run

Throughout the month, the folks at Sony have been having a little battle with the group at Wololo.net. The "hackers" at Wololo made a public announcement on March 1st that their homebrew "Vita Half Byte Loader" exploited a vulnerability in the PSP title Motorstorm: Arctic Edge.

The group released a video showing how they managed to get Doom up and running on the PSP without much issue. Sony responded by pulling the game from the PlayStation Store prior to the group releasing their VBHL to the public. Those who already have the game, however, can still make use of this exploit. Those who wished to purchase the game or re-download as legitimate players are screwed.

Now, this past Sunday, the same group said they found yet another loophole in Everybody's Tennis for the Japanese and European markets. They claim that it would be "extremely dangerous for business" to allow users to run a games that are decades old. Obviously, this was said as a bit of a snarky joke towards Sony. Sony, in turn, pulled the game from the PlayStation Store, again before Wololo released the exploit to the general public.

While the group claims that their exploit is only useful for running homebrew apps and not pirated PSP or Vita games, Sony is still quick to act on their zero-tolerance policy of not letting users run unauthorized code on their systems.

It will continue to get interesting as Wololo claims to have a list of 5-10 exploits in PSP games so far, meaning more may eventually be pulled from the PlayStation Store as the information is made public to Sony.

Well sorta. its more they run a game that was not certified to run on it, but they may own. In some cases it is legal to run software you own on a different system, its just that the companies that own it don't usually like it.

I think its similar to the hackintosh or jailbreaking iphones.

So now all walmartolo has to do is list every game on the PSP has broken and Sony will pull them all and the PSP is dead.
