Pricing for PS3 Battlefield 3 Server Rentals and EZ-Unlocks Revealed

The latest blog entry for Battlefield 3 breaks down today's update for PlayStation 3 gamers. Probably the biggest change, at least for console players, will be the ability to rent servers to play on.

At present, you can rent servers in chunks of 1, 7, 30, or 90 days at a time. The corresponding prices for those days are $1.49, $6.99, $24.99, and $64.99 respectively.

Having your own server gives you the power to create your personal gaming experience. You can either tweak every setting or choose a preset configuration and publish your server in just a few seconds.

What maps and modes do you want to play? Do you want to show the mini map or not? Do you want to turn off HUD elements and tweak respawn times and tickets?

The server rentals will also allow you to give your server a custom name, description, and logo. Server rentals, while technically starting today, will actually be rolling out throughout the next week. This is to ensure there is enough hosting power to go around to meet the growing demand.

Also new to PS3 owners today is the 5-flag Conquest Assault for Wake Island. Tweaked for this mode is the fact that the mobile anti-air now spawns at the Beach base location.

Finally, new players to the game (at least on the PS3), can pick up "shortcuts." These ten different items are available through the PlayStation Store and include the following:

Kit Shortcut Bundle: Immediately unlocks all items unique to the four playable classes
Vehicle Shortcut Bundle: Immediately unlocks all items for all vehicles
The Ultimate Bundle: Immediately unlocks all items from all other available shortcut packs

Ok, so those actually sound really damn lame. The rest of the changes sound good though.

Seriously, buying unlocks? That's something I would expect Activision to do.

They did it for Bad Company 2. I think they've been trying to do it since BC1, but we know how that went. Why can't they just do what BF: Heroes did and sell exp. point boosts instead? While there is some advantage given, at least some work is done to actually play the game, not just "I unlox Allz brah Cuz I pahy!"
