Fans eagerly waiting for the final release of the 1.2 version of Minecraft don't have to wait for much longer! Minecraft 1.2 is slated to be released tomorrow, but eager beavers can get a jump start and download the latest snapshot for the game right now.
The last major snapshot for Minecraft was the 12w08a snapshot and included the addition of upside-down stairs for decoration, changes to the lighting system, and an iron golem to protect the townsfolk. Prior to that was a massively increased world height, jungle biomes, pet cats, and more.

This news comes just a day after Mojang revealed that they have acquired the Bukkit team to handle the modding side of Minecraft. Bukkit was a server-side method for adding and managing Minecraft add-ons and mods and is now the only official way to administer Minecraft server add-ons.
The Bukkit team will be working to create a new API that will be used for both servers and clients. The team's first order of business, however, is to ensure that mods are compatible with the upcoming 1.2 release of Minecraft.
