Notch Steps Down as Lead Minecraft Developer

Notch is no longer the lead developer of Minecraft. Come on, admit it, you all already thought he had stepped down as lead developer ages ago. The new lead on Minecraft will be Jens Bergensten, the man responsible for most of the work and coding done on the more recent Minecraft updates anyway.

As of yesterday, Jens Bergensten is the new lead developer on Minecraft. He will have the final say in all design decisions, so he will kinda sorta become my boss, I guess. I’ve promised him to not pull rank.

We’ve been working together on Minecraft for a year now, and I’m amazed at how much in synch we two are when it comes to how to design the game. And when we don’t agree, we discuss it and something much better comes out at a result. He’s truly a great person to work with, and I feel very confident handing over the leadership of Minecraft to him.

Jens can be found on Twitter @jeb_ if you would like to follow the latest in Minecraft development. As for Notch? Well, he's going to go do what he does best.

I will now rest for a while(...)

I feel like Jens is more creative than Notch. Notch had a great original idea but he seemed to be somewhat stubborn and slow bringing out updates until he stopped working on the game and Jens basically took over. Now we have a full release, a overhauled adventuring system, achievements, a new way to end the game, etc. I know a lot of these ideas were Notch's but Jens is the one who really sped up their implementation I feel.

Re: Notch Steps Down as Lead Minecraft Developer

Its a good move and though it may have been hard for Notch to do, will probably make minecraft last longer and be better than before.

There are many many many examples throughout history where people are the brain of the idea, but they cant get it off the ground and it takes another to do that. One guy has the ideas and the other guy is able to bring it life. Together they make a great invention. I think the case of the same here when it comes to the game.
