Call of Duty Elite Hits 1 Million Paying Subscribers

Is your mind blown by the headline? It should be. Activision revealed today that there are four million people signed up for Call of Duty Elite, with one million of those users ponying up the cash for the premium service.

"The audience response to Call of Duty Elite's premium service has been beyond our expectations, and we want to thank Call of Duty players around the world for their unprecedented enthusiasm," said Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard. "The number of gamers who have registered for Call of Duty Elite further illustrates how this service is poised to redefine social gaming and set a new bar for interactive entertainment."

"The demand for Call of Duty Elite at launch was so overwhelming, that for the first several days, the service did not perform up to our or our fans standards. I want to personally thank our fans for their patience. Our teams have been working around the clock to get the service scaled up to meet demand," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO, Activision Publishing. "I'm very pleased to announce today that the service is now performing stably and anyone who wants to try Call of Duty Elite is now able to do so. Due to the scaling challenges we encountered at launch, we are giving all Call of Duty Elite premium Founder members an additional 30 days of the service free of charge."

Activision compares the one million attach rate figure with other services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, Sirius XM, and Xbox Live, all of which apparently reached one million paying subscribers roughly one year after their launch. They also note that 80,000 Elite clans have been created and over 100,000 user videos have been uploaded to the service. Elite has roughly three million daily logins.

It still does not work for PC gamers.

Who doesn't want a massive discount on all the DLC, not to mention all the people that got it with the Hardened Edition.

Yeah, the way they bundled the DLC, I would have bought the subscription because it saves money in the long run if you are DLC buyer.

Black Ops style servers (never thought I'd miss gameservers.com), discount DLC bundle (heck, even the rumored retro maps from COD4/MW2) and some respect for PC gamers (not just blissful ignorance).

There have been 3-5 small patches for PC, and only with this last one we get a hint with a tweet by @fourzerotwo that that Stealth Bomber issue should be resolved. Consoles on the other hand are getting constant tweets about updates and issues being worked on. Activisions website went down do to "maintenance" a couple of days ago and Elite servers are experiencing constant "issues', ya there is no DDoS going on here somewhere. Not to mention the story is an insult to any true fan of even the single player series.
