Rainbow 6 Patriots is Heavy Rain with More Shooting, Arrives in 2013

UPDATE: The video has been released for everyone. Here it is embedded below in case you missed it on GameInformer.

Original story: GameInformer has the first ever look at what Rainbow 6 Patriots could end up looking like. We say "could end up" because the footage shown in the announcement footage was made over a year ago and does not represent actual gameplay, but target ideas for the team.

“Terrorism has evolved, and so has Rainbow 6," said creative director David Sears. "In Rainbow 6 Patriots, all the team play, tactics, and realism that fans of the series love have been coupled with an exciting new narrative direction. This adds an unprecedented level of humanity that will make Rainbow 6 Patriots an extremely tense and immersive experience.”

GameInformer is going to have a month long look at the reveal for Rainbow 6 Patriots, beginning with a look at prototype footage. When we said that the prototype footage looked like Heavy Rain with more shooting in our headline, we meant it. Judge for yourself.

I miss the days where I can plot waypoints and setup go-codes on the planning phase of the mission, where you get an interactive map/blueprint of the area. It was even cooler when the maps were later upgraded to 3D with multiple floors. To me that was very immersive to play this meta-game where the strategy isn't made up as I go, but rather I can setup my team to standby in key points, before we flood the room in a pincer style. The best part is when the mission begins, everyone automatically goes to where I want them to go (like an RTS), and when I give each squad their assigned go-codes, they breach the room in different ways based on how I assigned their action in the planning phase (squad 1 flashbangs while squad 2 blows up the door with a breaching charge). I still don't know why everybody hates that part of Rainbow 6 causing the feature to phase out along with my beloved heartbeat sensor. I guess planning is a boring meta-game. To me it was an increase in immersion, because I like this kind of puzzle solving. As for the concept video I just hope the final game won't involve a rat battle.
