Blizzard DOTA Announced at BlizzCon 2011

As part of their reveals today, Blizzard announced their own DOTA title called Blizzard DOTA.

Blizzard DOTA is a new official custom game for StarCraft II, inspired by the Defense of the Ancients (DOTA) custom map for Warcraft III. Much like other DOTA-style games, Blizzard DOTA is a team-based competitive game in which each player controls a powerful hero with unique abilities, and works with his or her team to invade and destroy the enemy team’s base.

Blizzard wants to offer up a number of ways to play Blizzard DOTA (Defense of the Ancients) for free. No specifics are known yet but it is possible that those with the free Starcraft II: Starter Edition will be able to play Blizzard DOTA for free. Those who already own the full version of Starcraft II may be entitled to special bonuses that the free players cannot obtain.

Blizzard DOTA's heroes will be pulled from other Blizzard titles. Each offering up their own strengths and weaknesses meaning that teamwork is a necessity. They are focusing more on quality rather than quantity for the heroes so that they all remain distinct. More screens can be found at the Battle.net site.

With Valve making their own, stand-alone DOTA title with the help of the mod's original creator, it will be interesting to see which one people prefer in the long run.
