    From the Battlefield Blog:

We are happy to announce that the eagerly awaited Battlefield 3 Open Beta starts Thursday, September 29th!

Running until October 10th, the Battlefield 3 Open Beta is your chance to play the game early, try out our free social platform Battlelog, and help us make the game even better by sending us your valuable feedback.

If you pre-order Battlefield 3 (PC digital download version) on Origin before September 25th, or if you have bought Medal of Honor: Limited Edition/Tier 1 Edition, you will get 48 hours early access to the Beta, meaning you can start playing Tuesday, September 27th. The full details on how you will be granted early acess is available on our new Beta section.

For Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, the Open Beta will be visible on the consoles' digital marketplaces under Battlefield 3. For PC, you need to install Origin and download the Open Beta from within the Origin application.

I really wish they would pick a better map for the beta. they should have a conquest map. Don't get me wrong i like metro and rush, I was just hopping for one of the big maps with jets and all.

Well they haven't actually indicated the mode yet, if it's Operation metro again for sure, it could be Conquest this time. Remember all the maps in this game feature all the modes. Though I will say it's pretty weird that they didn't go with Caspain border, the hype on that map, and word of mouth is off the hook. Especially since I doubt Opertation metro in will have jets, and that was the one thing people are dying to get their hands on.For me I'm happy enough to play Operation metro again, even if it's on rush. But I can hear people grumbling about not getting to check out the glory of caspian border and all the air power in that map. Still as long as the beta is running smooth, and the game is looking polished I think we can wait until Oct 25 for the full experience.

Regardless of the mode, I dont see Metro having much in the way of vehicles.
So IMHO that supports the point of this being more of a demo than a beta, since a BF beta without vehicles is kind of pointless.

Zh1nt0s reply to the predicable complaints:
Stepping a bit further into development and closer to launch, this is a very good way for us to try out all the bits and pieces we have added in and changed since the Alpha.

The Alpha was very important from a server side of view. Now weยดre in Beta. Not only does the server side need to be tested but also the complete game client.
What this means is that we pick one map:

Metro: We have already showed this map and made some big changes to it to enhance gameplay as well as get it more fluent than in the Alpha.

Lots of new things have been added in closer to launch. Our rank progression system as well as customizations have made their way into the beta and itยดs very important for us to test these things before we launch.

That is the purpose of the Beta as well as combining it with Battlelog and all of the features there.

If you feel that this isnยดt the right map for you, then perhaps we donยดt really agree on what maps we want to see. Other than that, I do hope people will have a great time playing it and will enjoy the Beta
If one was cynical, one might assume that they consider it more important to test customization than to test vehicles

              Facepalming.

This is a glorified demo, but with a catch. The reason they have an open beta is to nullify the potential shitstorm once they release the game and the whole Origin/Battlelog combo blows up in bugs.

Re: Battlefield 3 Open Beta Starts September 29th!

I can see why the chose the same map. Its all about the stat numbers that the devs watch constantly. They have all the numbers from the alpha and you cant compare those numbers if you change the map because the variables changed. You wont know if the changes you made really affected the outcome.

Of course the other issue is that you know Metro will be well done, but thats about it. No information on map layout on any of the other eight maps. Of course, I guess you cant test every single map and make adjustments all the time as there would be no end to it then.

So no matter what you do, everyone is going to lose. Change the map and you dont know if the changes you made to weapons and everything else worked. Dont change the map and you dont know about other vehicles and the layout on those maps.

Im still looking forward to the beta and to see what changes were made from the alpha. We know the commo rose wont be in the beta, but Id like to see everything else.

Re: Battlefield 3 Open Beta Starts September 29th!

The changes DICE did after alpha were based on false data anyway. Was the first stage too hard? Yes, but mostly because the spawning didn't work and you had to walk from main base all the time. So now DICE looked at the data and thought, clearly the first stage is too hard and SL spawn only doesn't work so they bring back all spawning and change the map layout because feature X is broken, not Y and Z that are being tweaked. Then there's the fact that the game was new and no one gave a fuck about playing it the way it should be played but just tested stuff out like weapons and proning through the whole map. And if DICE can't make a map without open beta feedback, the rest 8 maps are gonna be really bad.

I doubt I'll install the beta. Might log on to battlelog to see if I can/have to reserve my soldier name but otherwise I'm already looking forward to post release impressions and game play videos of the conquest maps. Couldn't care less about beta.

They really pushed the limits of that "September" time frame for the beta.

Seeing that the map was Op. Metro on Rush killed my boner slightly. I also played the heck out of that map in the alpha. But the truth is, alpha players are a very small minority, and their reasoning makes sense. I just wish they would add in Caspian Border as well though. I understand them wanting to have a consistent test bed and whatnot, but the truth in, conquest and vehicles need to be tested too. If this was a real beta, they would have both maps. Even BC2 had a beta map with all the vehicles on it. I'm hoping they add Caspian later on in development.

Sorry to say while the game looks pretty I was able to max out the settings and run at 60fps+ on a sub $1k machine (the alpha).

Even putting the graphics on Low looked the same as High

Ah well I hope they've fixed some of the annoying bugs in it.
