Uh oh, is there something rotten in the town of GameStop? Earlier today reports came in saying that employees at GameStop were instructed from the higher-ups to open up retail copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and pull the OnLive promotional code from the game box. This promotional code gave purchasers access to an OnLive version of the title. Well, GameStop is at fault as the upper management gave the word to each store to pull the codes from the boxes prior to selling the game to customers.
Gamespy contacted a PR member from GameStop, Beth Sharum, and here is what they had to say about this:
What is interesting to note here, is that back in April, GameStop acquired Spawn Labs and by way of this acquisition also acquired the Impulse digital distribution platform. Is GameStop really not playing nice with a product because they offer a bonus for a competitor? That sure seems to be the case.
The problem doesn't stop there though. Later on in the day, stores were instructed to pull every copy of Deus Ex: Human Revolution completely off of their shelves. Joystiq obtained the following second email sent to stores that directed them to simply pull the copies entirely.
As part of an "agreement" with Square Enix and GameStop's involvement with Impulse, all copies will be sent back to Square Enix. Yikes!

"Square Enix packed the competitor's coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge and we did pull and discard these coupons," Sharum said.
