EA Wants to Innovate, Doesn't See Much Benefit in 3D Yet

EA's CEO, John Riccitiello, recently revealed that as a company, EA just isn't all that interested in 3D just yet. In fact, he sees a greater benefit in innovation, social games, and online gaming.

"We see really high returns in these markets and very poor returns focusing on 3D, so we are allocating our resources toward new innovations," Riccitiello told stockholders at EA's annual meeting.

"Frankly we have not seen a big uptake for 3D gaming. We have not seen a big uptake in 3D TVs in the home, at least not yet. We are not here trying to drive a market. We are here to react to what consumers are looking for."

While he personally doesn't have a problem with 3D technology, he notes that many have had illness brought on by the Nintendo 3DS and continues to note that the system has not sold as well as initially hoped. It's a concern that customers have that are keeping the technology from taking off and becoming a bigger focus for EA.

      Maybe, maybe not.

Last time I upgraded, I had to choose between Nvida and their 3D vison and AMD and their Eyefinity multimonitor support.
A friend bought the Nvida solution and hasn't used it much, in fact he still haven't been able to give me a demo. I choose Eyefinity and is starting to use it more and more as I have learned to work around its problems.
But that is on the PC, where its not unusual to have an extra monitor, and they can be had for relatively cheap.

On the consoles it looks different. The Xbox 360 and PS3 both support 3D, so there is already a large potential customerbase there. And they are not unlikely to go for 3D when they need a new TV, just to avoid getting stuck with obsolete technology. So I could still see 3D happening.
