It's come to light today that Zynga, the uberpopular creator of social networking games, had put in a bid to buy PopCap Games for the humble sum of $1 billion (USD). The offer was rejected, as we all know, for EA's offering that is "more complex and (a) potentially more lucrative offer."
EA's offering provided $750 million up front in cash and stock options. On top of that a performance bonus of $550 million is possible over two years for a total potential payment from EA for PopCap of $1.3 billion.
If Zynga had been successful in its acquisition of PopCap, it very well could have been everything Zynga had in cash. Reports from Forbes say that at the end of March 2011, Zynga had just shy of $1 billion on hand.
