Technically speaking EA Black Box is using the engine to make Need For Speed: The Run, but I guess you were implying the engine isn't meant to be sold to non-EA related third-parties, nor given to the freeloading mod community. I guess all I can say now is that I hope nobody reverse engineers the game and proves how it could have been possible, albeit royally painfully so in this fashion. I mean, GTA3 had online multiplayer with vehicle position and hit detection. Actually forget that, the game doesn't even have any code for spawning players, yet team selection (mafia vs. triads I think) was somehow added in by insane people who somehow homebrewed a SDK (and figured out how to fake respawns through GTA's teleportation system). Point is, if the tools require computer hardware that goes beyond the residential market, then I feel much better. But if I see someone figure out a way to mod BF3 using nothing, but the game and his/her own homebrew SDK, then I'm going to be pissed off knowing lack of time was the real reason. I get the annoying feeling I missed out on cool third-party DLC that could have harvested the entire potential of FB 2.0. I know what I just said does not reflect what most people think though. Oh well, bummer.

Its been shown time and time again that games with or without modding capability still sale DLC regardless.

I wonder if the lack of mod tools isnt something larger to do with the industry and jobs. No one ever mentions that aspect of it. Everyone goes toward the greed thing, which is an easy knee-jerk thing to say, yet sales of DLC show the opposite as well as the precentage of people that play mods.

Yeah, I don't think its greed, well, to the point where it probably reduces costs a bit to develop the tools, more the fact that its probably just too time consuming for them. Also, maybe they are right. maybe its like crysis, how it was built for some hypothetical gaming rig that wasn't exactly possible without some serious cash, maybe thats the same deal, that unless you have a network, is rather unfeasable (something like K16 said)

            lol

My money says Project Reality knows how to make mods damn well and Frostbite ain't going to stop them.

Really? Where is my BC2 Project reality > ? Or at least a BC2 Mini mod for them to at least get used to a version of the FB engine when they were prepping for the release of BF3.

Project Reality is on the Arma 2 engine which is much more suited to their need, why would they spend time on BC2? I even remember they wanted their own engine or something, so nope they're not staying on BF.

                  PR started on ARMA, right?

You mean before going to BF2? I'm not 100% sure but I think they started on BF2 as a mini-mod, up to a full mod and it's not until version 0.6 something that they began to work on Arma.

Yeah, I wasnt sure on that either. I thought they started in ARMA first, but after checking their website, it looks like they did start in Battlefield and have expanded into ARMA.

They licensed a real game engine now, and are ready to go full developer; so let's see what they do with their first commercial game.

One thing modders in general and fans tend to forget; is that modders can afford to polish their maps and mods beyond what a developer can; becausse they are never constricted by the publisher to finish the game beyond a certain date; they can afford to release incremental updates to fine tune gameplay and balance in ways that a real developer could never do.
Name me one mod that had more than 8 maps on their first public launch; name me one mod that came to completion within 3 years; now tell me if you would buy a full priced release of a game with 2 or 3 maps, no matter how good they were.

I can't wait for them to make their first real commercial game! That's like a dream come true for me! I've always wanted a fun game that's realistic!

well if they were prepping for BF3, they would at least try and get a handle on how they are going to modify an earlier build of the engine, which may be even harder to do, but do it for the experience, wouldnt they?

Well I think you CAN wait, cos they just announced they licensed a game engine; design and programming and modeling is just commencing, and it will be years before we see any work done.
Ironic situation ahead: once they want to sell this, they will have to put a headline to get to beta, and a publishing date, even if they go indie or release through steam.
We can just hope that by the time they are done, FPS games are still relevant or profitable; we can't discount Activision running them to the ground.

EDIT: ok here it is http://www.realitymod.com/pr2.html Project reality 2; a stand alone game using the C4 game engine, started pre-production in 2009; it hasn't reached alpha status yet. Apparently they have been asked/assured there will be funding for them to port the PR2 game over to consoles and they have considered to distribute the eventually finished game digitally. Will there be mods available for PR2? Stay tuned!

I know it takes a lot of time.

I wonder if Novalogic went "down" or if they're just developing a new engine before their next game comes out, it's been years.
