EA Under Fire for Battlefield 3 Pre-Order Bonus

A few days ago we posted up this news about the Physical Warfare Pack and some exclusive content.

Planet Battlefield has posted up this question and answer via twitter's and blog postings about the pack and what it means to the game:

rcenters : You said no magnum ammo or body armor a long time ago, but now we see "DAO-12 armor piercing flechette rounds"?

Demize99: There is a trade off to their armor piercing: lower base damage.

Power2ouse : The flechette rounds I assume have less damage but more penetration than buckshot, or how is that going to work?

    Demize99: Indeed

tfk777: No Physical Warfare pack for the U.S.? We better get something exclusive too...

    Demize99: Wait for it.

Demize99: Before the forums goes all "omg magnum ammo" Armor Piercing comes at the expense of lowering damage. It's also unique to flechettes.

GamerOfFreedom : So what about Armor? I remember you saying there wouldn't be Magnum Ammo or Body Armor

Demize99: No body armor spec. Standard buck can't penetrate a thing. Flechettes can at lower damage values.

rcenters: So does that mean there will be body armor perks anyway, or class based automatic armor like in BF2?

Demize99: No, standard buck shot has no penetration. That's all it means.

ConorPFitz: I have a question about the DLC for BF3. Will the maps work like the VIP map system in BC2? Are the weapons unlockable?

Demize99: No comment on how DLC works right now.

JGrasli: Let me get this straight for ALL; #BF3 NO body armor, NO magnum ammo (except shotgun flech..), NO EXPLMK2-spec etc? And acc-spec?

Demize99: Shotgun Flechettes are lower damage. NOT MAGNUM. No Body Armor. No Explmk2. #NoComment other weapon stuff yet...

rcenters: So how will the kits in BF3 be setup? Recon, Assault, Engineer, Support like 2142, or Recon, Assault, Medic, Engineer like BC2?

Demize99: You'll hear plenty about kits in the future.

Jkoverlord: i remember you guys saying that you dont want anything that will increase your HP or damage, cuz thats the best decision u made

Demize99: And that's still true. I do think it's ok for a player to give up some damage for utility in another way. That's balanced.

arc7891: so the flechette ammo have the same accuracy & same distance as standard weapon without it?

    Demize99: Yes.

Silver_Rook: question.... these pre order bonuses? are they available to everyone once they rank up? or are some TRUE exclusive?

Demize99: The Physical Warfare Pack is fully exclusive. There's no other way to get those 4 items.

And then this article by thinq_:

Electronic Arts, the publisher of upcoming shooter Battlefield 3, has come under fire for a pre-order bonus scheme which fans of the series claim makes the game unbalanced and unfair for those who don't qualify.

To tempt gamers into shelling out for a pre-order copy of the game, EA has teamed up with UK retailer Game to offer some exclusive in-game content: the Type 88 LMG, a gas-powered, air-cooled light machine gun with bipod for improved accuracy; a unique flash suppressor for the SKS sniper rifle, which makes it harder for enemies to pinpoint where shots are coming from; and armour-piercing flechette ammunition for the DAO-12 shotgun.

In addition to these exclusive extras, those who have pre-ordered the title from Game or Gamestation will receive day-one access to the DAO-12 semi-automatic 12-gauge shotgun - something other gamers will have to work to unlock using in-game experience points.

EA's decision to make certain weapons exclusive to those who pre-order the title hasn't settled well with the game's fan base, however. Since the company announced the deal yesterday, fans have been queuing up to complain - especially the ones who have pre-ordered the title directly from EA, and who are thus unable to claim their freebies.

Comments on EA's official blog for the game are almost exclusively negative. "I have no problem with day-one unlocks as a little bonus," claims one fan, "but store exclusive weaponry is just pathetic."

Read the rest of the article at: http://www.thinq.co.uk/2011/5/24/ea-...#ixzz1NVK3USP0

So on the one side we have these exclusive offers for pre-orders that cannot be achieved any other way. Yet, according to the question/answer session, they don't seem to mean anything anyway. Or do they?

As mentioned in the Q&A, buckshot cannot penetrate anything, but there is no armor selection, but flechettes can penetrate at the cost of lower damage. So what are the flechettes penetrating? Could this be other material or objects? In my opinion, I think that's exactly what it means.

So with that being said, what are your thoughts on all this? Is this changing the Battlefield game and is it for the good? Will these exclusives be balanced across the regions? Will everyone be able to get some type of exclusive gismo or will some regions be out of luck?

So if flechette has lower base damage... then it will do lower damage and be pointless against Kevlar or players... It's literally just for shooting through corrugated fences.

That was what I was thinking, walls and light vehicles.
It doesn't seem particular useful for a shotgun.

But never mind that, the problem here is the exclusivity, not the specifics of the items. I want to have as complete a toolbox as the preorders.

the point of flechette ammunition is to go through stuff, like penetrable surfaces, some sod is the other side of a penetrable surface? like wood etc? wallbang him with flechettes so might not seem that useful unless you are in enclosed spaces

the idea of exclusive content is tbh utter **** especially in a Battlefield game where they are using the unlock system, we should ALL be able to get the same equipment, all the pre order bonuses should do is give early access, complete rubbish from EA and I hope they realise that and change it

And also, Demize has stated that other weapons will have flechettes as well. The DAO usually has a large magazine though and I can see that being an advantage. I mean, so what if they are lower hits when you can quickly shoot 10 into the wall?

Crunch: No just the part of the way DICE is doing this whole pre order thing. It has gotten way out of hand. These days I don't pre order anything as I have gotten burnt to many times lately on crap games.

Thats a good point Stilla, I dont blame you. I havent pre-ordered either. We will see what the beta brings. I think BF3 will be a great game and that I will enjoy it, but Im only speaking for myself.

The ap ammo is actually good for the shotgun because it will go through several soldiers in a row instead of stopping on the first (like sniper rifles). So if you find a group of soldiers all bunched up it will be good to use.

The Physical Warfare Pack is fully exclusive. There's no other way to get those 4 items.

not a big fan of exclusive weapons and ammo especially the SKS sniper flash hider. grrrr i guess if they throw it in with the pre-order ill get it anyway, but i dont see the reason for exclusive stuff. its not the BF way...
