In a recent "Ask Me Anything" thread on Reddit, Minecraft creator, Notch, let it be known just how many units of his game he's sold throughout its Alpha and Beta periods.
This means that in total, Minecraft has pulled in €22,910,000 or roughly $32.8 million US dollars. Keep in mind this is not all profit as there are, as mentioned above, fees that PayPal takes away, taxes, and other expenses. Not to mention differences in the currency exchange rate at the various times of purchase.
Still though, not too bad for a game that started off with just one developer and is still considered an independently developed title by a very small group of people.
A lot. It all ends up in an account somewhere, and I try not to look at it. I get a normal salary these days for day to day stuff, but there's a big pile somewhere.
The game sold about 800,000 copies at 9.95 euro and then so far 1 million more at 14.95 euro. Paypal takes a cut, there are taxes, and such, but it's still a huge wad of money.
