  • Rumor: Sony to Start Using Serial Codes to Combat Piracy?

Due to the release of the root keys for PlayStation 3 titles, it's starting to circulate around the web that Sony is about to require the use of serial codes in order to play games.

These codes, usable up to five times, would work similar to PC serials keys. You will need to input the code before you can play your title. This news comes to us from a Dutch website (via Edge).

The impact this will have on PS3 game rentals and used game sales might be devastating. That is, if this is going to be true or not.

Well what would you have them do then to combat piracy. And how do you see it as suffering? PC companies have been doing it for years and I have never suffered because of it.

Bah, you both are right and wrong.

The problem is Sony has been hacked big time and they are trying to figure a way to work around the problem and prevent it in the future. They are going to have to do something and adding a code that links to your account is a way to do that.

The downside is that you can no longer sell your used games, which is what everyone has been trying to stop for some time because of money loss by the companies. This hacking has now opened a venue that they may not have thought of otherwise. So :yay: hackers, right?

As for not being hurt by PC doing that and piracy, look at all the developers that spin how they have to go to console only to make money. A large number of games are not for PC because some old guy in a suit with a C title believes this spin. Then you have prices for PC staying constant for longer periods like never before and some companies even going up to the $60 mark.

We all know the piracy thing isnt entirely legit, but it doesnt matter what we think, it matters how the companies react to it. In the end, it usually hurts the honest people.

And how would that work for PS3 users without an internet connection?
