yea the patching has been a big headache for 2142. you gotta patch it a certain way otherwise it will start BFHQ crashing n stuff.
however, i dunno if i want to buy it on steam to attach my current player account to a brand new cd key. that'd be kind of a waste.

The account isn't tied to the key in that way, but you can create one new account per key. All the key prevents is that there aren't more then one key playing online at a time. Thus, all the new person has to do is create there new account on the new key which is tied in name only, because you can still log into other accounts.

BFBC2 is new in the respect, you enter your CD-key into your account, not when you install the game, but when you create your user account, sorta like an MMO where you need the key to activate your account.

A game where CD-keys and account names becomes a real pain is Call of Duty World at War where you have no choice in the matter which was a huge pain repurchasing the game through Steam. Later COD games are based on Steam accounts. COD4 Modern Warfare the account info is local and encrypted based on the CD-key, but no server side stuff.
