Is This a Record Setting Portal Speedrun?

YouTube user, Transgenic86, claims to hold the new world record for a Portal speedrun. His time? 9 minutes, 25.567 seconds.

He makes extensive use of exploits and glitches, obviously. He also notes in his extensive behind the scenes commentary videos how he uses a script that jumps constantly. Other than that, he says that everything done is by his own hand.

What do you guys think? Can you beat his time? It should be noted that it took him roughly two years from the start of his venture until he completed it. Maybe you should just wait for Portal 2.

So other than using exploits, glitches, and scripts, he did it all himself? I just dont see that as an accomplishment.

"Other than using hacks, Ive become the #1 player in the US by myself." Yeah, that sounds good.

Though I am impressed how everything was mapped out.

Exploits and glitches are free for everyone to use, and scripts only simplify what you could have done yourself (well for the most part anyway). Remember that the speed run community doesn't look at glitches and exploits the same way most do... if you can find and succesfully use a glitch, it's often even encouraged.

That is true, it is a different playing method to accomplish this. Its the scripts that I dont care for. Why not just automate the whole thing with a program and be done with it? I know, now thats crazy talk, but its a few programs away from being reality.

Maybe I am being too much of a purist.

Apparently you haven't heard of TAS (Tool-assisted speedrun). This commonly involves playing the game at a super slow speed and then playing it back at normal speed, also making extensive use of exploits and glitches left in the game. It's also far more common on emulated games from yesteryear.

This is far far more legitimate. He wasn't using anything outside of the program itself that was provided as is by Valve. He didn't alter values or change any exe's, etc... So in the grand scheme of things it is far more impressive and legitimate than most other speedruns out there.

Well thats good to know. Again, when I hear scripts, it sounds like a third party thing.

Scripts are fairly common in a lot of games though, especially Source titles. Even WoW has them and actually has a dedicated section that lets you set up scripts and macros to be assigned to a key or command.

Source is the same way, just bind a key to do an action and voila, there you go.

All this script did in the video was jump. Moving, aiming, shooting, etc were still done by the player. And he only did the script that auto jumped to help with the backwards hopping thing he did.

Actually, take a look at the guy's first walkthrough video from the link above. He explains it more clearly there. And yeah, I admit I sat through all 15 of his walkthrough videos. Some really really interesting stuff learned not only about how he did it, but about Source and Portal in general.

Re: Is This a Record Setting Portal Speedrun?

I'm pretty sure that backwards hopping he is doing is using a 3rd party program to speed up how fast he can move.

Much the way they were used in BF2 to make guns shoot faster than they were supposed to or jump/shoot/prone faster than they was supposed to let you.
This isn't something that you can do "by yourself." the macro is forcing stuff to happen way faster than physically possible. This is nothing like WoW and anything like this in WoW would get you banned.

The "portal community" realize this is the fastest run with exploits. You are "encouraged to use exploits" on runs where you use exploits.(that was meant to sound exactly like it did) There are much more talented people making legit runs.

It's similar to car racing or speaker competitions.

His hopping has already been discussed. Please read through or check out his first walkthrough video. The only script he does is jumping. Moving, shooting, etc. are all done by him as noted.

Portal was free, for a brief period time. It's no longer free to download.

And Portal is an amazing game.

Download First Slice, its a demo of Portal and I bet as we get closer toward Christmas it will go on sale.
