David Jaffe Responds to EA Louse and It Ain't Pretty

David Jaffe, creator of God of War and Twisted Metal, responds to the remarks made by the EA Louse the other day. Oh, if you thought the Louse was uninhibited, you haven't read anything yet.

Here it is, in its entirety:

Knowing nothing about the company, game, or people, I'm in no position to comment on how true and valid all this is vs. how much it's just a tantrum from someone who felt they should have been listened to but was not.

I will comment on two things however:

#1- EALouse- no one gives a **** if you or the animators get to express yourselves IF in expressing yourself it breaks the fiction of/immersion into the world of the game. It's not a ****ing art class where everyone gets a chance to 'show what's inside them!'...it's work. I don't know much about the Warhammer world but **** man, seems a pretty spot on comment that if the whole fiction is about some horrid, down and dirty war then mechanics and animations that allow characters to ****ing DANCE are probably not going to fit into that universe. And the fact that you feel removing the dancing- which was a good creative call in my mind- served to take away some of the team's ability to express themselves does nothing but paint you as someone with out of touch, unrealistic expectations of what your job is supposed to do for you. Games SHOULD allow for self expression by members of the team- that is FANTASTIC when that happens and something management should always try to offer up- but it's gotta be within context of and in service to the product.

#2- What the **** is it about making games where it brings out the worst, most immature, most obnoxious sides of certain types of people on a team? Everyone thinks they always know better than the people in charge. On God of War 1 I still remember a small group of hard core gamers on the team that felt we were making the game 'wrong' because there was not all this deep, deep, Street Fighter 2/Tekken style depth to the combat system. "Jaffe's out of touch!" "Jaffe doesn't 'get it!'"...never did it occur to them that we were going for something else...even tho I explained this to them over and over! But still, every few weeks I could count on this little contingency being up in the studio head's office pitching 'their' version of the game, with the goal being to have the head step in- which he never did- and shove their ideas into the title. **** it annoys me! Am I the only one in games who has experienced this?

    David

Wow, things seem to be heating up a bit.

Nice move, Dave, you don't look like you're full of it or anything.

And how is what he says any worse than what the EA Louse said?

Wait, is this the guy that produced God of War 2 and 3? According to extra credits at the escapist, the point he started producing him was when the stroy of GOW lost its intellegence...

It looks like he read what Louse said, then rage typed all that. Doesn't take much intelligence to gather that...

Yeah, you're quite wrong if you think any of what Jaffe said was in any way worse or further off the mark than what the Louse said or did. I think you should probably go back and actually read the two articles next time?

I dunno, but jaffe seems to be commmenting on a game he knows nothing about, to a guy who is losing his job, from a guy with a pretty stable one

I dont think it is worse, I just think he completely ignores the important parts and goes for a few weak points in the whole essay.

I must admit, I was also thinking "Crybaby" when he complained that he was prevented from doing his expressive dance.
But the main point was the top-down leadership by Good Old Boys who has more experience with Excell than with games development.
I am sure that there could be raised some valid counterpoints to that, but this just seems like attacking the messenger instead of the message.

I find this all quite amusing. (and highly unprofessional)
