3.42 Firmware Update to PS3 Allegedy Patches Out USB Jailbreak Ability

A mandatory update to the PlayStation 3 firmware was rolled out a short time ago by Sony. Touting only a change log of including "additional security features" it is assumed by many to be a patch that prevents users from jailbreaking their systems.

For those unaware, a rather easy means of Jailbreaking a PS3 was revealed a short time ago. This method required only the use of a USB thumb drive and no additional hardware modifications.

As noted in the PS Blog news about this update, the community seems to be rather divided on the subject. Some are in favor of patching out the exploit, while others are, understandably, a bit more irate at not being able to jailbreak their system.

People dont really want their consoles to do additional things. Its not safe for the system or other gamers. Its better to purchase a Sony approved USB thumb drive for your system that was designed for whatever task specifically for it. Who knows what would happen if all these strange features were unlocked that were never tested for a console of any kind. Next thing you know, consoles could surf the internet or run email programs or do video capturing or even play movies. Thats crazy talk and consoles are just meant for playing games and nothing more. If you mess with this type of stuff, before you know it, youve divided by 0 with your PS3.

OK, so....was this jailbreak really an exploit?

Since you only needed the program and a USB stick, yes it was an exploit of the PS3's security. Same thing happened with the iOS 4.x update from Apple. Simply going to a website on your iPhone or iPod Touch allowed it to be jailbroken easily. I think Apple patched that out, allegedly.
