    128GB Blu-ray Discs Revealed

Sharp has just introduced their 128GB capacity Blu-ray discs, which are twice the size of current Blu-ray discs.

The "BDXL format" supports discs up to 128GB in size for single-write Blu-ray discs. Those looking for a re-writeable option will be able to squeeze in just 100GB of data onto a disc.

Unfortunately, with this new capacity comes a need for new hardware. Sharp is set to introduce new Blu-ray recorders in Japan when the new line launches on July 30th. This also means that current Blu-ray players on the market will not be able to read these new discs, and new hardware will need to be purchased if you wish to partake of the high-capacity goodness. Right now, however, movies and games will continue to use the more readily available Blu-ray discs already on the market, so fear not PlayStation 3 owners.

Pricing is not yet known, but estimates place the discs between $55 and $60 (USD). Plans for a release in North America have not yet been revealed.
