Internet Lists: Top 10 First-Person Shooters of All Time

Who doesn't love a random top ten list from a website on the Internet? We know you love them, so let's get a little discussion going with the latest from Joystick Division. Here are their top ten first-person shooters of all time. Of. All. Time!

Let's see where good ol' Counter-Strike wound up on their list.

    8. Counter-Strike (2000)
Systems: PC, Mac OS X, Xbox
At its peak, the Counter-Strike cultural sphere was a dark and disturbing place. It was a spot where hackers stalked servers and vitriol was spat over headsets with little abandon. But that didn't take away from the fact that after its release competitive PC gaming would never be the same. Counter-Strike spawned countless professional gaming teams and for years it dominated the PC community, exponentially outnumbering more recent popular titles like Unreal Tournament 3 and Quake III. It provided limitless hours of multiplayer combat and a brilliant physics engine, giving the player a constant IV drip of adrenaline. Players flock to it even to this day to experience the realistic and compelling gameplay of Counter-Srike that is seldom surpassed. With the constant updating and third-party game-crafting (many CS modders have gone on to become professional game developers), expect for this one to be around for a long, long time.

Lasting Influence: New level of professional gaming. Get good enough, and someone might actually pay you to play video games competitively. Best. Job. Ever.

Half-Life 2 clocks in at the number two position on their list of top ten. What was their number one choice? Where do Modern Warfare, Doom, BioShock, and others fall on the list? You'll have to check out the full list to find out. Here's a hint: It was a Nintendo 64 title.

Althought I agree that Goldeneye WAS highly influential in FPS, the absence of Wolfenstein is puzzling? I know it was a "first" before the others?

But then again. LISTS are like 'behinds'.........everyone has ONE, some are NICER than the others.............

Few games I wouldn't have up there at all. I do agree that Goldeneye 007 is the number 1 FPS game of all time. List is surely missing some hard hitters.

I don't agree that Goldeneye is the #1 FPS of all time. But that might be because I've always hated thumb-wrestling a controller. That list seems to lean heavily towards console titles and what advanced their interest in the genre. I fully believe that the first Half-Life and mods+expansions have done more for the genre and were more influential than Goldeneye.
