Re: Rumor: Battlefield 3 to go Multi-Platform

Frostbite 2 is most likely DX10 based (no DX9), with some DX11 eye candy, but in its essence it's DX10 based engine.

Now, if they back in 2005 actualy ported BF2 to XBOX360 (MC was originaly made for XBOX One), I think
it would have run medium size maps with 32 (24) players using medium settings, 720p.

So, what we have here is engine (FB2) made for all platforms, but this time around (comparing to FB1)
PC players will get: Large maps/64 or whatever, hight settings, true DX10 engine, DX11 eye candy
Consoles: Medium size maps/32(24) players, medium settings, no HBAO or similar filters, 720p,...

It is possible, and everyone is happy...But will we see soon enough...I hope...

PC sales make up a fraction of video game sales. The smart money is to make the game for consoles as that is where the money is. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron. Sure, I'd like to see a PC-only BF3, but it will NEVER happen. Just be glad that they make a PC version at all.

Just wait for the announcement that DICE goes "always on" like C&C4/SC2 and all others who will follow.Games For Windows will be LIVE again on PC with 60 bucks a year, every other Developer will build an own "IW-Net" if they dont already have a contract with EA or Ubisoft who will build there own versions of XBL etc. etc.

PC gaming is dying,we PC gamers will all quit or be forced to be console gaming slaves with more expensive hardware. The freedom of hosting and modding will only be in our memories.

        R.I.P.

I blame cheaters on the PC for this trend.

You really don't know that, I'm pretty sure if they just released on PC that EA wouldn't get enough money and they'd get all pissed. But it's like the man said. How is anyone surprised at this? Be glad it's not like BC1 and only for Consoles.

Not so much the cheaters, I think, as it is the pirates. Hacked copies downloaded for free=stolen.

Pirates don't exactly mean lost sales. Especially for games that are primarily multi-player. Many people who steal games wouldn't buy them in the first place. So less people aren't buying the PC version because of pirates. Maybe the growth rate isn't as high as it could/should be, but it's not pushing customers away.

On the other hand, cheaters push players over to the consoles. Which makes consoles take more sales from the PC. Which also makes less people buy the PC version.
So since the balance shifts even more due to cheaters, I blame them for games being created for consoles and crappily ported over to the PC.

Cheating also draws resources away from developers. They don't have to contract with third-party anti-cheat programs on consoles, but they do on the PC. So that increases overhead. Since they have to spend more to slow down cheaters, they have less remaining time and money to optimize their engines or test for compatibility, or whatever else could make the game better.

This is why I support public torture, or at least the destruction of their PCs, for cheaters. If a virus destroyed the PCs of all cheaters, that would be too good for them.

It's more the lack of uniformity in the PC gaming segment that is leading the developers to migrate to the console space.

"My Celeron III with Win Me and 342MB of RAM doesn't run the game...."

"My Quad Core 9800, Win 7 x64, 12 GB of RAM doesn't run the game....."

"My rig built with military and NASA surplus parts doesn't run the game...."

                    Contrast with

"I put the disc into my PS3 and it worked!!"

"I put the disc into my XBox and it worked!!"

Re: Rumor: Battlefield 3 to go Multi-Platform

Nowhere does it implicitly state that BF3 will be seen on a console.. I think alot of posters are making assumptions. I know the trend with DICE as of late has been to go console first then port. But I just don't see this happening with BF3. Especially when there were interviews in regards to modding BfBC2 and the frostbite engines that stated tools weren't being made for BfBC2 because of some issue with it being a pain in the *** for them and that tools were being worked on for Frostbite 2 engine games. BFBC2 uses frostbite 1.5. Bf3 is a frostbite 2.0 engine powered game. I think a little slack and some headroom should be allowed in regards to DICE on this one. I'm perhaps being optimistic.. I just don't see a game like Bf3 going multi-platform. It would detract from its pedigree and the franchises legacy in the PC community.. I think if they did, a good portion of the PC community would disown them.

I don't know. You all have valid arguments and I am sure there is no one reason, but:

                          1. There is no method for game developers to count downloaded purchases. Because of this there is no way to know the actual numbers of PC purchases. The market is going by hard sales only. THATS CRAZY! WHY HASN'T ANYONE FIXED THIS? (I don't know if this is entirely true or of there is some other way around to count numbers)
                          2. BC2 is on console and its awesome. Why can't DICE make BF3 have all these graphic/whatever details for PC that can be turned on/off but have a lower setting for the consoles?
                          3. Awes. Rumor is going around how BF3 is going to blow everyone away with its awesomeness. Do you guys really think they are going to say that its too awesome for Console?
                          4. Money. It is what it is. Why cant they cover all the basis and profit?

I just don't think its going to be PC only. DICE has proved they can do some great things on console. They have put all this research and design and testing into the console side of things, only to throw it out for BF3? Wouldn't you think they are using all these years of no BF3 to make it compatible with consoles? Yeah, PC made all video games what they are today, not just DICE, ALL of them, but what about the people that made the console games popular? Did they not show that porting to a console is profitable and that the console community will support them just as well, if not more so than the PC?

Look at all the facts of the last few years with all the developers and what has been going on and tell me that BF3 will not be for console. I would be very surprised if it is not.

Also, its not a slap in the face to PC players. The console market finally evolved enough to be able to run something like a Battlefield game. Who knows what the next gen consoles can run or even these existing systems. Look at the games that are being released today that a year or two ago said couldn't be done because it was a console. Yes, they will reach a limit, but who knows what a newer engine can accomplish.

I guess this post has become more of a rant Just by myself looking around and seeing what the publishers are doing, it seems pretty obvious to me.
