Activision Not Confident in Call of Duty 7's Sales

While today's meeting with investors from Activision confirmed that Call of Duty 7 (working title) would arrive this year, it's sales forecast was met with some reservations. Activision themselves said that they have "not planned on the same level of success as we enjoyed in 2009" with Modern Warfare 2.

Here is what Activision Publishing CEO, Mike Griffith, had to say about the upcoming Treyarch developed Call of Duty title.

"We've consistsently grown the Call Of Duty franchise revenues year-on-year for the past seven years. We expect to continue our stategy of annualising this franchise opportuntiy. At the same time, we recognise that Modern Wardfare 2 was an unprecedented success, driven in part by the game quality, our retail and marketing execution, and by the relatively friendly competitive environment [at Christmas].

"We expect to have a more difficult competitive environment this year, and therefore we've not planned on the same level of success [with 2010's CoD title] as we enjoyed in 2009. That said, we're still bullish on this year's title, and we do see upside potential if we execute well by engaging the much larger set of consumers who were introduced to the Call Of Duty franchise in 2009."

While Activision may not have much faith in their other, non-Infinity Ward Call of Duty developer, the fans can still look for Call of Duty 7 to arrive later this year.

If they try to pull the same s@#$ with COD7 as they did with MW2 they wont make even a dent on the market.

I think since the releaase of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 treyarch's series of games has disapered from the scene thats where treyarch fails as soon as an Infinity Ward releases a title BANG everybody leaves the Treyarch game behind. aswell as the lack of Multiplayer features to keep people interesting in playing ,they could spice up CoD7 by adding Zombies into the mix again aswell as more varients of weapons More Game modes, Emblems maybe to keep players... playing

I feel that an " I told you so" is in order. Just kidding, they did not have competition last year at all, you had Operation Flashpoint and Arma II come out but that was it and obviously those are TOTALLY different games. Now they are going to have to contend with BFBC2 and eventually and hopefully BF3.

And I'll tell you exactly why.

Game titles ride a bit on PR but mainly their predecessor. MW2 had COD4 as its father. It would have been a hit if it was made by 3 blind hedgehogs in a bag. Which in some aspects it may as well have been. People are stupid though, and like hopeless lemmings bought MW2 without the faintest idea what they were paying for.

I pity the game that has MW2 as its father.

The only thing COD7 has going for it is that it's not Infinity Ward.

Three things could happen out of this. (More actually, but I want to point out just three )

                1. Treyarch releases the game but people dont buy it because of what IW did and therefore Activision blames Treyarch and you can guess what happens from there.

                2. Activision "knowing" the game is not going to do as well decides to make the model the exact same as MW2 with TreyNET and the same "support".

                3. Treyarch releases the game and it builds a huge PC community that is way stronger than MW2, proving the NET model doesnt go well with PC.

I guess the main thing is that if people do not buy it because of what happened with MW2, then you are punishing the wrong developer and not really getting any message across. If they make TreyNET and then no one buys it, that could send a message.

The other problem is that as far as PC goes and the bean counters not counting direct download sales, PC numbers are way below consoles and we all know the trend of console players is to play a game for a few months and then move on.

Well I didn't really like COD5, and MW2 was pretty lame. I'm stickin with BC2, probably the new MoH.

Yes, but this one was posted first. Also its still news and should be on the front page. By it getting on the front page, other things are triggered to update.

Also, the lurkers see it off the bat.

Well, it's pretty much expected, I don't think even MW3 will do as well as MW2.

It's bound to get boring after some time.
