  • [RUMOR] No Half-Life in 2010

The rumors section in the February 2010 issue of Game Informer magazine proclaims that we will not see a new Half-Life title any time soon. Their "Loose Talk" rumors section offers up the disappointing news to every crowbar swinging fan out there.
"Loose Talk has learned that there won't be any game from the franchise in 2010, and what will finally come out is still unknown," reads the self-proclaimed "rumors and scuttlebutt" column in the February 2010 issue of Game Informer. "Will it be Half-Life 2: Episode Three? Or will it be a full-on Half-Life 3?"

At this point, do you believe Valve is working on a simple "Episode" or will it actually be Half-Life 3? Perhaps Valve is hard at work creating other titles in order to release another Orange Box-like package.

As with all rumors, be sure to take it with a grain of salt until official statements are made by Valve.

A friend and I was talking about the success of developers and how sequels seem to get pushed aside because of it.

Way back in the infancy of game development people did not have all this money thrown at them. These teams create a hit and make a multi-million dollar game and all of a sudden they have money logs to burn. There is no incentive to continue the work they started. So your publisher says to do it, what are they going to do, fire you? So what, you have millions. You will drive out of that garage port in your Bentley so fast, the companion cube will spin.

Think back to all those titles that were super hits and what happened to the sequels, IF they ever even got off the ground.

When you have tons of money and never have to worry about it and you have your dream job and created the most awesome games in history, where is the incentive?

It would greatly sadden me if Valve confirmed this. I've been itching to continue the story since the cliffhanger at the end of Episode 2.

Because the 2 years since episodes 2's release isn't enough to finish an episodic game...

          God of War 2/3?
          Uncharted 2?
          MW2?
          L4D2?
          Battlefield 2?
          Banjo-Tooie?
          The Mario/Zelda/Metroid series?

Sequels tend to do very well. It's the small time developer who makes one great game who usually won't find success the second time around (I'm looking at you, Rocksteady)

I can also make a list of sequals that were cancelled or when made were not that great and/or not like the first one at all.

Lets also not forget that many consider L4D2 what the first one should have been or that its an expansion pack.
Also, IW mentions in a number of interviews the struggles they had with how they wanted to make their games and how they were tired of them. Of course, not the one they were currently working on, never tired of that one

There are some successful sequals, Im not saying they are all failures, however a lot of them are also made by other people and not the same team. Even MW2 was not made by the same leaders inside IW but some newer people.
