EA Looking to "Take On" Modern Warfare

Right now, Modern Warfare is top of the war shooter hill. The game's publisher Activision stands atop that hill — a hill rival companies like Electronic Arts are eager to climb.

"In March we will launch Battlefield: Bad Company 2, which is our first strong attack on Call Of Duty," EA Europe boss Jens Uwe told MCV Magazine. "The shooter space is one we don't want to give up. It's an important genre and we were the number one. So we are certainly working on how we can get that crown back and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is an important product in that context."

According to Uwe, "If any of our studios can take on Modern Warfare, then it's DICE." Known for the Battlefield series, EA Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment AB (EA DICE) is a Swedish video game developer owned by Electronic Arts.

Now I know this is not really a surprise to anyone. We know EA has been trying out different things. We also know that prone and lean are being removed from Bad Company 2. Games are being developed for consoles first. It has also been confirmed that no mod tools will be available for BC2.

With the hype of Modern Warfare 2, will EA be able to go back to being top FPS or will they lose themselves in trying? Is all this "take on" talk hype for the games? Is Bad Company 2 really a first attack and, if so, what others are there and why does it take so many? Is EA taking the same tactics from the Activision playbook? Finally, could this competition help the games or hurt them?

Exactly. The old BF games still destroy any of the new, dumbed down console FPS games. Why they think they need to further dumb down BF in order to compete is beyond me.

I guess it might be time to move on.......

There's not going to be mod tools due to the engine being too young. Like gvd said, "If you thought the BF2 Editor was hard...".

COD is on top of the hill because there has been no PC title since BF2 to challenge it. BF:BC2 will be that challenge, with more coming later from BF3 of course. I'm confident EA will at least make a valiant effort to overthrow COD, but honestly, I don't care if COD still sells more. I've always loved the BF series and look forward to this title coming out.

To answer the OP, the reason it takes more titles to topple COD for the top spot is because COD is releasing titles on a much quicker pace than the BF series. I'm not saying that's what I want EA to do, but they haven't released a full on FPS title since BF2. If you wait 5 yrs, it's obviously going to take time to come back. BF3 will be the silver bullet against COD for the PC community, but I think COD will always dominate consoles. Lastly, competition always helps games.

Very good points Nate, I likethat.

Maybe to the companies they think this, but to us Gamers, its a different story. Maybe these huge corporations have studied us and our trends a little too much.

Of course, we sure do buy a lot

I damn well hope that "Taking on Modern Warfare 2" doesn't mean stupidly small maps, grenades and grenade launchers galore and few vehicles. IE, They better not change what makes the Battlefield series much loved by us PC users. If they do hopefully it is only for BC2, f**k up BF3 and I will never forgive DICE.

No Lean? No Prone? No Mod Tools...sounds like MW2, but with dedicated servers.
