Modding Tools Teased for Modern Warfare 2

Infinity Ward's Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling, hinted that modding tools might be on the way for Modern Warfare 2. This was said in a Twitter response to a fan asking about news on dedicated servers and mod tools.
Nothing on Dedicated Servers, but there may be some Mod Tools news coming in the future, I'll pass it along once I have it.

It will be interesting to see what sort of solution they have for mod makers, unless the news is simply "sorry, there won't be any mod tools released." We'll just have to wait and see.

    FIRST: Yeah, but how much?

Kool, its good to see that they are listening to the community a bit. Until now I think IW/Activision have been shooting themselves in the foot, no matter what their success may be.

      Found this on BASHandSLASH:

How will we play the new maps?

BASHandSlash.com reader Lamonte has a good theory:

"Maybe just custom maps for private matches. Or a system like Battle.NET back in the day for WC3. If they do it like BNET that means they'll have to add in a lobby system".

Whatever they do, I'd be surprised they will get any of this done before the end of January as most of their team is still on vacation.

      What about DLC?

Providing us with the ability to make maps could undermine IW's ability to sell us downloadable-content. However, I can see IW meeting us halfway on this one.

BASHandSlash.com reader Quak0r is not so sure. He thinks this Blizzard to sell your Starcraft2 maps article holds the key to what IW is planning: http://kotaku.com/5343006/blizzard-y...net-eventually

After all...there were no games that could touch MW2 a few weeks ago. Now BF:BC2 and MoH are yapping at its heels. IW might need to woo back some of the PC guys after all.

not having dedicated servers but having mapping tools would defeat its own purpose.

if you have a custom map you would have to host a private match so only friends can join. and being that theres no sever browser, people that are not friends cant join these games.

imo still no hope for this game

IW proudly intorduces MODNet, a DLC expansion of MW2 that allows you to browse and download modded content and play on unranked dedicated servers.

Cmon mate, have some respect for them. First see if the tools require a payment and if not all the better. However without dedi servers I doubt it will work.

I wouldn't believe a word that prick says.

Its hard to find such a tosser employed as a community support manager.

IW has had their day, bring on the new FPS king.

EA/Dice had some tosser community managers, BF2142 brings back fun memories.

I bet they were worried about popularity with BC2, then BOOM MOH trailer, and they had to give in.

why are you guys so convinced we'll have to pay for it? PC users always got stuff for free while console guys had to pay. if i had to guess, i'd say it will be for free.

AFAIK the Blizzard store thing will allow the modders to set the price. It's still a step in the wrong direction though.

How is it a step in the wrong direction? For me it's one of the three major reasons I haven't bought Modern warfare 2.

                              1. No mod support
                              2. No lean
                              3. Dedicated servers

And in that order, because mods and dedicated servers while usually being joined at the hip, aren't always. And I'd rather have lean and mod support back, then lean and dedicated servers, but no mods. Or mod support, and dedicated servers, but no lean (cause it's hard to count on lean being added in by mods, though possible). Sure I want all three, but right now I'll take what I can get, and this is a step in the right direction in my eyes.
