Good Possibility of No Dedicated Servers for id's Rage

id Software's John Carmack has stated that as of right now it does not look like the multiplayer component to Rage will use dedicated servers.
“It’s not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don’t think we will have dedicated servers,” he says.

Infinity Ward made the same decision for “Modern Warfare 2” and has been facing a massive backlash among its fans. The inevitable online petition has gathered over 183,000 signatures and even the developer has acknowledged the backlash.

“Modern Warfare 2” will use a matchmaking setup powered by IWNET for online play. It’s too early to say what Rage will use, but Carmack indicated he believed the servers are something of a remnant of the early days of PC gaming.

That said, he realizes the affinity many PC gamers have for them – and is glad “Rage” won’t be leading the charge away from them.

“The great thing is we won’t have to be a pioneer on that,” he says. “We’ll see how it works out for everyone else.”
    It has begun.

Rage might not be 'leading the charge', but if it doesn't have dedicated servers then it's certainly right behind the charge, egging everybody on....

I don't think id have been too worried about making good multiplayer games recently anyhow.

      Just saying...

Yea I agree the last game of theirs I played multiplayer deathmatch was probably doom2. I just hope they get the single player part of Rage right.

Did id even make Quake 4? Or was that another game they farmed out to Raven?
Either way, from Quake III Arena to that? Then look at Doom 3. ET:QW didn't turn out all that well...

They're still doing just fine with single player games, though. So why spend time trying to get a good multiplayer experience put together?

So a system that has no advantages over dedicated servers and takes multiplayer gaming backwards is the way of the future?

The tagline for Rage is "Please Be Patient While the World is Ending."
