Some Gameplay Scenes Can be Skipped in Modern Warfare 2

If you happened to catch the spoiler filled video we put up here just the other day for Modern Warfare 2, we have a bit of a follow up. It seems as though select gameplay pieces in the game can be completely skipped over if you find the content too questionable to play.
"Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 features a deep and gripping storyline in which players face off against a terrorist threat dedicated to bringing the world to the brink of collapse. The game includes a plot involving a mission carried out by a Russian villain who wants to trigger a global war. In order to defeat him, the player infiltrates his inner circle. The scene is designed to evoke the atrocities of terrorism.," according to the statement provided to Kotaku from Activision.

"At the beginning of the game, players encounter a mandatory "checkpoint" in which they are warned that an upcoming segment may contain disturbing elements and they can choose not to engage in the gameplay that involves this scene. Consistent with its content, the game has been given an "M" for Mature by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board. The rating is prominently displayed on the front and back of the packaging, as well as in all advertising."
This was in a statement released by Activision earlier today.

Guess this is leaning toward my achievement angle from before. Who here wants to bet that there will be some achievement that you can only get if you play every single mission?

Meh. It's their game. I suppose it's fair.

Political Correctness FTL? Or a genuine attempt to allow players to choose whether or not they play very disturbing levels? (very disturbing being in the eye of the beholder mind you)

Well at least they provided a choice. I am in no way against this level, but I know there are some people who do not want to see that up close as terrorism may have touched their loved ones.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, if they dont want to see it, the option is there. They dont have to complain. If there is anyone who says this shouldnt be and its a mistake obviously wants people to b!tch on their favourite forum.

Morally speaking, I think its even worse if they let the "hero" player gun down civilians, just to keep his cover.

That sends a message about how the end justifies the means that are going to raise some serious debate. Even if it is skipable.

I think they are just digging themselves deeper and deeper into the hole each time they open their mouth.
Not unlike the issue with dedicated servers.

They also have this option in the PC multiplayer menu.

Would you like to skip playing on Dedicated Servers? [ ] Yes [ ] Yes

oh yeah, and the Australians are flipping out

A prominent children's lobby group is calling on the Government to review its decision to classify as suitable for 15-year-olds an upcoming video game that allows players to assume the role of a terrorist and shoot innocent civilians in an airport.

They massively nerfed the gore effects in Left 4 Dead 2 in the Australian version.

While it may not be perfect, at least they give the option not to play it.

Yes but as Chris said, surely if its gone gold it has passed all the certifications already so removal of content, especially this late in the release isnt going to happen. At most they will pull it from the shelves, but i know plenty of shops that will still sell it.
