Permabans from Xbox Incoming for Early Pirates of Borderlands

Microsoft hates pirates with a passion. Their hate runs so deep that they are actively permabanning any pirates they see playing copies of Borderlands and Forza 3 already.
You know, when you play a pre-release title on LIVE when I know you shouldn’t have it, it’s not hard for me to figure out.

Don't worry folks, anyone who bought a copy early is ok. In general, if you got a receipt, play away. These are illegit copies we're hitting

This is by way of Stephen Toulouse's Twitter page. Toulouse is the Director of Policy and Enforcement for Xbox Live, so you know he means business.

Once again, this is only for illegitimate copies of the game that are being played. Those who legally purchased the games have nothing to worry about.

Sounds like a good plan, but there is not much they can do about those playing online over different networks besides xbox live using mod chips, which many gamers have been doing since the Dreamcast, PS2 and XBOX.

That's an extremely small niche, so they probably don't have to worry too much about that.

I thought it was a small niche until everyone I knew that had a Playstation 2, Dreamcast, xbox and xbox360 was using a modchip, and playing on a different network that adds features that were not originally built into the game. There is no way to tell how small it is since there is no way to track the amount of people using modchips and playing on pirate networks. It only cost them $25 to $100 to get their console setup manually or done by someone that has done it before. Many do it just to play import games from Japan and other's to play the games they just copied from their local videogame rental store.

Where do you live that everyone you know modded their consoles? I've never met a single person who has ever done so on any console.

Dunno, most of my friends had their consoles modded.

At a minimum 50% of my mates had their PS2 chipped.
